Austria Travel and Vacation – Good to know

Austria is part of the Schengen Area. Citizens from many countries do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. If needed, a Schengen visa can be applied for online or at the nearest embassy. A visa is not available at the airport, so timely planning is important.
The Vienna International Airport (VIE) is the largest and offers the best international connections. Alternatively, the airports in Salzburg and Innsbruck are also easily accessible. Use public transportation to get to the city center, as they are affordable and convenient.
The local currency is the Euro (€). Credit cards are accepted in most stores, however, it is advisable to carry some cash for smaller expenses. ATMs are widely available. Please check with your bank in advance about possible fees for withdrawals abroad.
Although no specific vaccinations are required, it is advisable to take out travel insurance to protect yourself against unexpected medical costs. Also, check your personal vaccinations (tetanus, flu) and be aware of possible COVID-19 regulations.
Visitors from EU countries may drive with their national driver's license. Travelers from other countries should bring an international driver's license. SIM cards are available in mobile phone shops and supermarkets. Prepaid rates are affordable and easy to activate, ideal for shorter stays.
