The Journey

Motorcycle loop through Peru – Arequipa, Machu Picchu & Colca Canyon

From the beautiful colonial city of Arequipa, this motorcycle tour through Peru sets off on a grand loop through the best the country has to offer. The Panamericana takes us along the Pacific coast before we climb into the Andes and visit the great Inca sites. The Amazon jungle awaits, as do Lake Titicaca and the Colca Canyon with its condors. On the CFmoto 450MT or Honda NX500 we cover around 2,700 kilometres on predominantly well-paved roads.

Peru

This Peru motorcycle tour covers a grand loop through the country's highlights – from Arequipa through coastal desert, Andean highlands, Machu Picchu, the Amazon, Lake Titicaca and the Colca Canyon, ridden on the CFmoto 450MT or Honda NX500.

Days 1–16

Arrival in Arequipa

Welcome to Peru! On arrival in Arequipa, the vibrant colonial city in southern Peru, we pick you up from the airport and take you to the hotel. Your guide holds a briefing covering the route, paperwork and the motorcycle security deposit. The rest of the day is yours at leisure.

Altitude: 2,300 m (7,500 ft)

Arequipa – Puerto Inka

Time to start our engines! Getting out of the city is the first challenge. After around 50 km we reach the Panamericana and follow it northbound. After 140 km we drop to sea level on the Pacific coast and ride all the way to Puerto Inka — a unique hotel right next to Inca ruins that your guide will show you in the evening.

Distance: 410 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: 2,300 m → sea level

Puerto Inka – Nasca

We follow the Panamericana northbound through one of the world's driest deserts, heading for Nasca — world-famous for its geoglyphs that are only visible from the air. In the afternoon there is the option to take a half-hour flight over the pampa.

Distance: 180 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: sea level → 500 m (1,650 ft)

Nasca – Huacachina

On through the bone-dry desert to the most beautiful oasis in the Americas: Huacachina. Palm trees, a lagoon, towering sand dunes all around — exactly what an oasis should look like. In the afternoon you can ride dune buggies and try sandboarding.

Distance: 150 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: 500 m → 400 m (1,315 ft)

Huacachina – Paracas

We ride back to the coast and head for the little fishing town of Paracas. A boat trip to the Islas Ballestas — the ‘Poor Man’s Galapagos’ — is on the schedule. Afterwards we explore the spectacular Paracas National Park on the motorcycles.

Distance: 75 km | Road: Pavement + maintained gravel roads in the National Park | Altitude: 400 m → sea level

Paracas – Ayacucho

A long, spectacular riding day: we leave the desert behind and ascend into the mighty Andes. Soon we are at serious altitude on well-maintained winding roads with constantly changing scenery. We end the day in the large city of Ayacucho.

Distance: 360 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: sea level → 2,800 m (9,200 ft)

Ayacucho – Andahuaylas

A long ride through the heart of the Andes — predominantly paved but with possible gravel stretches. High mountains and deep ravines flank the route. This is what motorcycling is about!

Distance: 235 km | Road: Predominantly pavement | Altitude: 2,800 m → 2,400 m (7,875 ft)

Andahuaylas – Ollantaytambo

The road is not straight for a single mile. We cross the Andes again on twisting roads through Urubamba into the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The day ends in Ollantaytambo, famous for its massive Inca fortress.

Distance: 340 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: 2,400 m → 2,800 m (9,200 ft)

Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.

Machu Picchu

The absolute highlight of the tour: Machu Picchu. There is still no road to this magical place, so early in the morning we board a train to Aguas Calientes and then a half-hour bus ride to the entrance of the citadel. After the visit we return to Ollantaytambo by train.

Altitude: 2,430 m (8,000 ft)

Ollantaytambo – Cusco

We ride through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, visiting various Inca ruins along the way. We end the day in the ancient capital of the Inca Empire: Cusco, the Navel of the World.

Distance: 80 km | Road: Predominantly pavement, possible gravel | Altitude: 2,800 m → 3,500 m (11,500 ft)

Days 11–12: Amazon Jungle, Puerto Maldonado

We leave the motorcycles in Cusco and fly to Puerto Maldonado. Our lodge team takes us to the river docks, where a boat carries us deep into the Amazon jungle. For two nights we stay at the lodge with all meals and excursions included. With luck you might spot a jaguar!

Domestic flight to Puerto Maldonado | Altitude: 3,500 m → 200 m (650 ft)

Return to Cusco

We leave the lodge early and fly back to Cusco. The rest of the day is free — a perfect chance to explore markets, restaurants and colonial plazas at your own pace.

Cusco – Puno

Back on the motorcycles for a magnificent ride across the Altiplano to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca. We pass through Sicuani and Juliaca — the latter an unforgettable experience with chaotic traffic.

Distance: 390 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: 3,500 m → 3,800 m (12,500 ft)

Puno – Chivay

Early morning boat ride on Lake Titicaca to the world-famous Floating Islands of the Uros. Back on the motorcycles we cross the Andes once more toward the Colca Canyon, rewarded by spectacular mountain views. We spend the night near Chivay, where natural hot springs await.

Distance: 315 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: 3,800 m → 4,910 m → 3,600 m (11,800 ft)

Colca Canyon – Arequipa

An early start — the condors won’t wait. After about an hour we reach Cruz del Condor in the heart of the Colca Canyon to watch Andean Condors soar in their natural habitat. Afterwards we ride back to Arequipa, closing the loop.

Distance: 260 km | Road: Pavement | Altitude: 3,600 m → 2,300 m (7,500 ft)

Departure from Arequipa

Today we take you to the airport for your flight home. Safe travels — and until next time on the road!

Altitude: 2,300 m (7,500 ft)

  • Start and finish is Arequipa. Airport transfers are included in the tour price.
  • Machu Picchu, the Nasca Lines, the Amazon jungle, Lake Titicaca, the Colca Canyon and the colonial UNESCO city of Arequipa.
  • Travellers from the EU and Switzerland need a passport valid for at least six months beyond the planned departure date. No visa is required for stays of up to 90 days.
  • Check and refresh your standard vaccinations as needed. A hepatitis A vaccination is additionally recommended for Peru. Consult your GP or a travel medicine specialist for personal advice.
  • Yes. We will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall and are easy to spot. Please do not leave the hall until we have found each other. We track your flight online and will react to any changes in arrival time.
  • Check whether your health and accident insurance covers you abroad and supplement it with cancellation, repatriation and legal cover if needed. Ensure worldwide validity and note the emergency numbers.

  • Road conditions vary but usually pleasantly surprise our participants. Tolls apply on main roads but motorcycles are often exempt. The off-road proportion is indicated in the tour programme.
  • Risks vary by stage. Daily briefings reduce accident risk. City traffic can be lively; in rural areas animals roam freely. We recommend defensive riding, full protective gear and zero alcohol.
  • Larger cities such as Arequipa, Cusco and Puno have well-equipped clinics. In rural areas care is limited. Comprehensive travel insurance with an emergency number is essential for this long-haul tour.
  • There is no single best time as Peru has multiple climate zones. April to October is ideal in the Andean highlands due to low rainfall. Our tour calendar is aligned with climate and weather.
  • Headaches, fatigue or shortness of breath can occur at altitude. Our stages are designed for gradual acclimatisation. Drink plenty of fluids; coca tea and ‘Sorojchi’ tablets help. We carry an oximeter and blood pressure monitor.
  • Budget around €110–120 for fuel on this tour. Fuel is sold by the gallon (3.8 litres) and can be paid by cash or card.
  • You’ll ride either the CFmoto 450MT or the Honda NX500 — two lightweight and versatile adventure enduros, nimble and comfortable on the paved Andean roads of this tour.
  • Usually only one seat (maximum two) is available in the support vehicle, allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Absolutely! Many participants enjoy joining by rental car. Everything is just as well organised as for the motorcycle group. We are happy to provide quotes for 2 to 6 people.
