OFFROAD-TRAVEL · EUROPE
Here is your Iceland adventure:Iceland is one of the most impressive destinations for real 4x4 off-road trips in Europe. This highland tour is aimed at travelers who want to not only see the well-known sights but also experience the rugged, unspoiled interior of the island with their own vehicle.
The Journey
This guided 4x4 trip takes you through some of the most spectacular highland regions of Iceland in one week. The route combines little-traveled tracks, volcanic landscapes, glacier views, deep fords, hot springs, and remote highland passages into an intense off-road journey for travelers with their own off-road vehicle or an optional rental 4x4. Meeting point is in western Iceland near the Geysir area, driving in a large arc through the northern and southern highlands.
In the evening, the group meets at an accommodation in the west of Iceland, near the famous geyser area. Those who arrive early can take the time to visit some natural highlights like the geyser or the Gullfoss waterfall. During the joint briefing, the route, driving conditions, and the specifics of the upcoming highland stages will be discussed.
After breakfast, the off-road adventure begins almost directly from the hotel. The route heads north along a little-traveled highland track. The path circles around Kerlingarfjöll, an impressive volcanic region with colorful slopes, steaming fields, and geothermal activity. Later, the drive continues on the Kjölur route, before a stop at a hot spring provides relaxation in the solitude of the highlands. Overnight stay is at the edge of the highland region.
Today the route leads over slopes through the northern highlands. Through a distinctive valley, Akureyri is finally reached, the most important city in northern Iceland. After a short break, it continues to the region around Myvatn. There, volcanic landscapes, bizarre lava formations, and steaming solfataras await. The day ends in a hotel located in a particularly beautiful scenic area in the north.
This travel day is particularly characterized by water, as several fords and river crossings are firmly part of the route. First, we go to the hot springs of Landmannalaugar, one of the most famous natural sites in the Icelandic highlands. Afterwards, the route continues through colorful volcanic landscapes and along little-traveled tracks in the south of the island. To end the day, a particularly stunning stretch awaits through one of the most beautiful regions of the highlands.
Today the southern highlands are in the spotlight. The landscape is characterized by wide views of powerful glaciers and pristine nature. At the same time, the stage demands quite a bit from the driver, as challenging water crossings and changing terrains make the day a true 4x4 experience. Overnight stay again in southern Iceland.
At the end of the journey, an intense off-road day awaits once again. Narrow mountain tracks, deep fords, muddy sections, and rutted tracks provide varied driving in a spectacular setting. A special highlight is the ascent to the Hekla Saddle. In good weather, there is a wide view over the highlands here, a strong conclusion to this trip to Iceland.
After breakfast, the joint tour ends. Afterwards, the individual onward journey begins. Those who wish can extend their stay in Iceland independently and explore other regions of the island.
