On the trails of the Paris Dakar Rally with your own or a rental off-road vehicle from the tour operator OVERCROSS. You can choose to join this 4x4 expedition along the legendary route of the Dakar Rally for either 18 or 21 travel days. We start at the Eiffel Tower in Paris and drive in a 4x4 convoy through France, Spain, Morocco, and Mauritania to the rally's destination in Dakar/Senegal.

For participants who do not want to take the "detour" over Paris, there is the option to meet with the OVERCROSS group at the port entrance Algeciras in Spain to join the expedition from that point.

We will not cover all stages of the original Dakar Rally during the expedition as it would make the travel time too tight. Traveling at our own pace, not "rally time," is the theme of this off-road expedition, with many surprises off the road.

Welcome to the off-road adventure trip to Dakar

The 4x4 expedition traverses "on the Road" the "vegetable compartment" of Northern Morocco to Marrakech to our last meeting and supply point. After dinner at Djemma el Fna, we leave the "Place of the Dead" where heads were once displayed on spikes. Over the Titzi N'Test Pass, our off-road vehicle convoy crosses the Atlas Mountains to the Hamada plain and the entrance to the Sahara. On selected stretches, the off-road vehicle group drives both on and off-road on the former supply stages of the Paris Dakar Rally into Western Sahara. Along the wild Atlantic coast, we head towards Mauritania. In Mauritania, things will get serious, and we will rarely see asphalt - and when we do, it’s only to cover kilometers. Following the tracks of the legendary Paris Dakar Rally, it can be booked optionally in Paris with 21 travel days (starting on the first tour day in Paris) from two participating vehicles or from Algeciras with 17 travel days (departure on the 5th travel day in Algeciras). The goal & challenge of the expedition: Dakar, the capital of Senegal.

Daily program: With the 4x4 on the trails of the legendary rally

Day 1: Meeting at Place Jacques Rueff in front of the Eiffel Tower

On the first travel day, we meet with our off-road vehicles at 8:00 AM in front of the Eiffel Tower in Paris, built by Gustave Eiffel from 1887 to 1889. The official start will be there, just like at the Dakar Rally. You have the opportunity to join the guide from Germany with your off-road vehicle and arrive in Paris as a group. After a brief introduction and some instructions, we’re off. The day's destination is the highest dune in Europe, the Dune du Pilat, with a height of 110m, a width of 500m, and a length of 2.7 km, stretching from north to south, near Bordeaux in Arcachon. Then we head to our first hotel. In the evening, we have dinner at a nice fish restaurant right by the harbor.

Day 2: Into the 4x4 Off-Road Vehicles and off to Spain

After seeing the Atlantic Ocean for the first time on our trip, which will be much warmer thousands of kilometers further south, we drive over the foothills of the Pyrenees into Spain. After a small mountain pass, we travel across the high plains of the Iberian Meseta to Burgos, our destination for the day. We will spend the night in a small cozy country hotel and wind down the evening with tapas and beer.

Day 3 & 4: Over the Sierra de Gredos to Seville, calling to Africa

One does not know where one is. Northern Spain is sparsely populated, and the vastness of the landscape reminds one of pictures known from 4x4 off-road trips in America. On the evening of the third day, we'll spend the night in a hotel in Talavera de la Reina, from where we will set off on the fourth day to our final destination on European soil. We need to cover kilometers to reach the goal of Day 4 early and have a few hours to enjoy beautiful Seville after checking into our hotel. Spain's fourth-largest city has one of the largest old towns in the world, alongside Venice and Genoa.

Day 5: The first kilometers in Morocco

We set off early in the morning in Seville and cover the last kilometers back to the ferry port near Gibraltar. Here, more participants of the Paris Dakar Rally Expedition join us. After crossing over, we must clear our off-road vehicles through customs and complete the entry formalities before we can take our first steps on African soil. As this can usually take a while, we will set up our camp in the Moroccan hinterland not far from Tanger Med. The first night of camping lies ahead, and the adventure feeling slowly arises.

Day 6: Moroccan Roads and the Cascades de Ouzoud

Along the coast, we head to Rabat, the capital of Morocco and the seat of the royal household, and then take small roads towards the Atlas Mountains. The Atlas stretches about 2300 km across Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia. The traffic is chaotic and takes getting used to, and driving requires a lot of concentration. We will work our way leisurely through the foothills of the Atlas towards Ouzoud. The first mountain passes are already waiting for us. In the evening, we will set up camp at a small campsite near Ouzoud.

Day 7: A short driving day with time for repairs and to enjoy Morocco

On the seventh day, you shall rest, and that’s exactly what we will do. It’s time to hike in the beautiful landscape around Ouzoud, where we can admire the 120m high waterfalls, and most likely, some Barbary macaque will cross our path. There is also time to thoroughly check your off-road vehicle before heading further into adventure. We have chosen a nice camp near Marrakech for our overnight stay, from where we are not far from the local workshops if needed.

Day 8: Meeting in Asni and crossing Tizi n'Test

In Asni, a mountain village in the High Atlas at the foot of Jebel Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa at 4167m, we set off together towards the summit pass of Tizi n'Test. Even though it’s not too many kilometers, it takes almost a day to reach our daily destination, the town of Taroudant, on the other side of the mountains with our 4X4 vehicles. On the single-lane road, you can encounter everything from donkeys to 40-ton trucks.

Day 9: African culture and fantastic driving fun in the 4X4 off-road vehicle

We drive through the beautiful 'Valley of Ammeln', full of almond trees, towards Tafraoute. The road winds continuously along the valley wall and makes the off-road heart race faster. We will see our first dromedaries, and the desert gradually starts to appear. Upon arriving in Tafraoute, we can stock up on supplies for the next few days and admire the gigantic monoliths, which look as if they were built by human hands.

Day 10 & 11: Through the Sahara to Smara

The first major off-road stage lies ahead of us. For two days, we will drive through the western foothills of the great Sahara towards the desert town of Smara. On the way lies the disputed border between Morocco and the former Spanish-occupied Western Sahara. You can still notice this today in the mentality of the residents and the language. While French is widely spoken in Morocco, one suddenly continues in Spanish. Where we will spend the night depends on how far we get each day. We will set up our wild camps wherever we like.

Day 12: To the metropolis of Western Sahara

We travel along a dusty track always along Saguaia el-Hamra, which carries water for most of the year, until we finally reach the coast. El Aaiún, the largest city in Western Sahara, is now not far away, and if we make good progress, there’s still time in the afternoon to let the vehicles rest, stretch our legs, or take a swim in the sea. In the evening, we will again spend the night at a campsite where finally showers are available again.

Day 13 & 14: Sahara, Sahara, and Sahara

For two days, we traverse the desert along Western Sahara and Mauritania. For this stage, we also reserve the option to take the more relaxed route along the coast towards Dakhla to the Atlantic, depending on our progress and group dynamics. For this stage, we have the option of pure Sahara and action or alternatively the relaxed route towards the Atlantic with a long coastal stretch along the beach and then back into the Sahara. On the Atlantic route, we can also make a stop in the surf town of Dakhla if needed.

Day 15: Into the Unknown

While Morocco is well known to everyone, Mauritania, despite its size of 1.03 million km², is rather unknown. We cross the no man's land to the checkpoint in the middle of the desert, where we spend the rest of the day dealing with the entry documents for Mauritania. There, the saying goes: Europeans may have invented the clock, but Africans invented time. After the border, we set up our campsite amidst the idyllic dunes.

Day 16 & 17: The Oasis City Atar as Our Destination

We follow the approximately 700 km long route of the iron ore train for about 350 km off-road to reach Atar. The route is challenging, and we will need two days to reach the oasis. Atar was once an important city in the high culture of the Moors, who are the namesake for the country.

Day 18: Out of the Desert and on to Dakar

After four to five days in the Sahara, we drive back to the sea and will travel one last time half on, half off-road in the Sahara before entering the Sahel region. We will spend the night on the beach, and for those who want fish... it's time to go fishing! The sea off Mauritania is considered one of the richest fishing areas in the world.

Day 19: On the Beach

Before 2006 when the road was built, the official route to Nouakchott was along the beach. Due to the tides, it is firm and smooth, making it nearly easier to progress than on the road. We take advantage of this and continue our off-road journey on this route. Our destination for the day is the capital, Nouakchott, where half of the Mauritanian population lives.

Day 20: Across the Senegal River

Anyone who doesn’t yet know Fech Fech will get to know it today. On wavy tracks, we head towards the Senegal River at the Senegalese border, which gave its name to the country. There are trees along the road again, and we see significantly more animals than on our previous stages. Our path leads us through a bird reserve in a national park where our European migratory birds winter. The day's destination is Saint-Louis. The city is located on an island in the delta of the Senegal River and has a very beautiful well-preserved town center from colonial times. We will camp not far from the city near the beach.

Day 21: Finishing in Dakar

We leave Saint-Louis in the morning and will reach Dakar around noon. For part of the route, we can drive along the beach again. Like the Paris Dakar, our journey ends at the shores of Lac Rose, the pink salt lake on the outskirts of Dakar. There, we will spend the last evening together and celebrate our arrival with good food. The next day is the official end of this expedition. From here, you have the option to ship your off-road vehicle back to Europe in a container and fly home, OR join the tour guides back overland towards Morocco, where the guys usually take a small break. From Marrakech, you can drive north to the ferry port on paved roads again.

Starting from Paris, it's about 7100km and from Algeciras 4700km. We will be driving almost exclusively on asphalt during the European stage.
Yes, vehicle transportation is possible upon request. You must apply for an ATA Carnet for your vehicle and issue a power of attorney for the transfer by a driver from the company OVERCROSS.
For Senegal, the ADAC recommends a Carnet de Passage. Even though it is not mandatory, it is still helpful to have one (see service for more information on this).
