MOTORCYCLE-TRIPS · SENEGAL
This Paris Dakar motorcycle trip takes you from Paris all the way to Dakar in Senegal in 22 days. Following the trails of the legendary rally, you roll through Spain, cross over to Morocco and work your way across the Atlas mountains into the desert.
The Journey
Your Paris Dakar motorcycle trip starts in Paris. From there you ride your own motorcycle or a rented enduro towards Dakar over 22 days. Within a few days you reach Gibraltar and cross over to Africa. Through the green north of Morocco you cross the Atlas mountains and finally stand in the desert.
On long sections you move offroad towards the Western Sahara. Along the wild Atlantic coast you cross the border into Mauritania, where it becomes even more demanding for rider and machine. You rarely see asphalt, and mostly only to cover distance. The route selected by OVERCROSS largely follows the original course of the rally, with a clear focus on the travel enduro aspect.
The destination is Dakar, the capital of Senegal. If you want more, you add the follow up tour through Senegal and Gambia. Short on time? Then you can also book the stage from Marrakech to Dakar on its own.
France
The opening of your Paris Dakar motorcycle trip: from the Eiffel Tower in Paris you roll through France towards the Spanish border and settle into the long haul to West Africa.
Your Paris Dakar motorcycle trip begins at the Eiffel Tower in Paris. After the welcome by the OVERCROSS team, the vehicle check and a briefing on route and safety, you are in the saddle. The first stage takes you out of the city towards the south, where the landscape slowly opens up and the anticipation of the great adventure grows noticeably.
On the second day of your Paris Dakar motorcycle trip you cover distance through France. On motorways and country roads you work your way south towards the Spanish border. This connecting stage is there to make good progress, so that more time is left for the riding highlights in Africa. In the evening you reach the border region with Spain and set up camp for the night.
Spain
On the Paris Dakar motorcycle route you cross Spain from north to south. Wide country roads and long stages bring you to Algeciras, where the ferry to Africa is waiting.
Across the Spanish border your Paris Dakar motorcycle trip continues. You cross northern Spain and put good distance behind you on the route south. Between mountain ranges and wide plains, fast passages alternate with winding sections. In the evening you reach your stage destination inland and prepare for the crossing to Africa.
The fourth day takes you through Andalusia to the southern coast of Spain. In Algeciras near Gibraltar, the European part of this Paris Dakar motorcycle tour comes to an end. You bring your motorcycle on board the ferry that carries you across the Strait of Gibraltar to Morocco. With the first sight of the African continent, the real expedition character of the journey begins.
Morocco
Your motorcycle trip through Morocco leads from the green north across the Atlas mountains into the desert. On long offroad stages you approach the Western Sahara and the Atlantic.
After the ferry crossing you set foot on African soil in Tangier. The motorcycle trip through Morocco starts in the green north of the country with first impressions of culture, traffic and landscape. You ride inland, get used to the new conditions and enjoy the first winding roads. In the evening you reach your camp and let the first day in Africa fade out.
Today the motorcycle trip through Morocco takes you into the Middle Atlas. Cedar forests, high plateaus and winding passes shape the stage while the altitude steadily increases. Between small mountain villages and wide views you challenge your machine on varied terrain. First easy offroad sections give a taste of what awaits you in the desert.
The High Atlas is on the programme of this motorcycle trip through Morocco. Over spectacular hairpins you cross high passes and look out on rugged peaks and deep valleys. The route demands full concentration, but rewards you with some of the finest views of the whole journey. On the southern side of the range the landscape turns drier and announces the approaching desert.
From Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, you continue your Sahara motorcycle trip. Kasbahs of clay and wide stone deserts shape the picture while the asphalt increasingly gives way to tracks. You gather your first experience on loose ground and learn to guide your motorcycle safely off the road. In the evening you set up camp under a clear starry sky.
Along the Draa Valley this offroad motorcycle trip through Africa takes you through endless palm groves and small oasis villages. The tracks become sandier and you practise the right technique for soft ground. Between green oases and barren desert, the contrast of the landscape is particularly striking. The day ends with a campfire and shared impressions in the group.
The way leads deeper into the south of Morocco. On this Sahara motorcycle trip, gravel tracks, sand fields and stony passages alternate. Far from paved roads you move through wide, empty landscapes. The support vehicle stays close while you refine your riding technique further on open terrain. The night is spent in the mobile desert camp.
Today you reach the Western Sahara and the wild Atlantic coast. This motorcycle expedition through West Africa follows long tracks between ocean and desert, where wind and open space set the rhythm. Again and again the view opens onto the roaring surf. The stage demands stamina, because supply points lie far apart. In the evening you reach a settlement along the coastal road.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
From Laayoune the motorcycle expedition through West Africa continues south. The coastal road runs dead straight through the desert, interrupted by offroad sections away from the route. Drifting sand and strong wind are part of daily life on this stage. You get used to the great distances and the barren beauty of the Sahara before you reach your next camp.
You reach the Dakhla peninsula, the last larger town before the border. Here the group prepares for the crossing into Mauritania: papers are checked, the motorcycles serviced and supplies restocked. This Sahara motorcycle trip takes a short breather before the most demanding part begins. Between lagoon and Atlantic you enjoy the evening by the water.
Mauritania
The motorcycle trip through Mauritania is the roughest section of the route. Between the border no man's land, endless sand tracks and the vastness of the Sahara, rider and machine are fully challenged.
Today the border crossing into Mauritania is on the programme. After the formalities you cross the notorious no man's land, a field of sand and stones without a firm track. This is where the motorcycle trip through Mauritania begins, the wildest part of this expedition. You reach Nouadhibou and receive a first briefing on the particular conditions of this country before the night in camp follows.
From Nouadhibou the motorcycle trip through Mauritania leads onto long sand tracks along the coast. Soft ground and dune fields demand the right technique and full concentration. Again and again the Atlantic appears on the horizon while the landscape stays empty. The support team secures the stage while you work your way metre by metre through the sand.
Along the Banc d'Arguin national park this enduro journey through West Africa continues. Here desert and sea meet, and the tracks lead through one of the most remote regions of the route. Flocks of birds and empty beaches accompany you while the deep sand challenges you. In the evening you set up camp far from any civilisation under the open sky.
The stage brings you to Nouakchott, the capital of Mauritania. This motorcycle trip through Mauritania switches from lonely sand into the lively bustle of an African city. You restock supplies, service your motorcycle and dive into everyday city life. The colourful fish market on the Atlantic is a contrast to the quiet desert days before.
From Nouakchott the motorcycle trip through Mauritania leads south towards the border with Senegal. The landscape gradually turns greener, with the first acacias and shrubs lining the track. Sand and gravel challenge you one last time in Mauritania before the vegetation grows denser. In the evening you reach the border region and prepare for the last change of country on this journey.
Senegal
The finale of your motorcycle trip to Senegal: across the border river you reach greener country, ride towards Dakar and end the expedition at the pink Lac Rose.
At the Senegal river you cross the last national border of this journey. The crossing at Rosso or Diama marks the beginning of your motorcycle trip to Senegal. All at once the landscape turns greener and livelier, with villages and fields replacing the desert. You ride inland and feel how close the great goal of Dakar has already come. The night is spent in a camp by the river.
This motorcycle trip to Senegal takes you to Saint Louis, the old colonial town on the Atlantic. Colourful facades, narrow lanes and the bustle at the harbour shape the place. You ride a calmer stage and dive into Senegalese culture. After the hard desert days you enjoy the milder climate and the relaxed atmosphere of the coastal town before continuing towards Dakar.
On the second to last stage of your Paris Dakar motorcycle trip you ride along the coast towards Dakar. Palms, fishing villages and the Atlantic accompany you on the way into the city. The traffic increases and the closeness of the great goal is clearly felt. On the edge of the capital you set up camp and prepare for the big finish the next morning.
The great finishing day of your motorcycle trip to Senegal has come. You reach Lac Rose near Dakar, the legendary finish point of the rally, where the pink salt lake lies before you. Together with the group you celebrate the close of 22 days in the saddle. Anyone who likes can add the follow up tour through Senegal and Gambia. The motorcycles are then prepared for the return transport in the container.
