Mexico Travel and Vacation – Good to know

German citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 180 days in Mexico. Instead, a tourist card is required, which can be applied for when flying or when entering by land. Make sure your passport is still valid for at least six months. Upon arrival, you will receive a form that you need to fill out. Keep it safe, as you will need to present it when leaving.

The Bojerias International Airport in Cancún is one of the best airports for travelers to Mexico, as it has direct access to popular off-road travel areas. There are numerous international connections. Alternatively, the Mexico City International Airport is also a good choice. From there, you can use domestic flights or buses for off-road trips to other regions.

The official currency in Mexico is the Mexican Peso (MXN). Although credit cards are accepted in many places, it is advisable to also have cash on hand, especially in rural areas and for off-road adventures. ATMs are widespread, but cash dependency should be taken into account, as card payments are not possible everywhere. It is best to use ATMs in banks.

While no vaccinations are mandatory, recommendations for hepatitis A, typhoid, and the current tetanus vaccination are made. A travel insurance with medical coverage is strongly recommended, especially if you are driving off-road. This protects you in case of an accident or medical emergency and ensures that you can travel relaxed.

In Mexico, you need a valid driver's license that is written in your language. An international driver's license is recommended to avoid misunderstandings. For SIM cards, it's simple: Let yourself be advised in a cell phone store, with Telcel and AT&T being good options. These are easily available and offer options for prepaid and data plans tailored to your travel needs.
