For most European and North American citizens no visa is required for stays of less than 90 days. For longer stays or special visa types, you should inform yourself online in advance and apply for the visa. A tourist visa is not available upon arrival. Make yourself informed well in advance of departure to avoid possible complications.
The international airport El Dorado in Bogotá is the largest and best-connected airport in Colombia. Here you have access to many international flights and can benefit from domestic connecting flights to others. If your destination is one of the coastal cities or Medellín, Cartagena and Medellín could also be attractive flight options.
The local currency in Colombia is the Colombian Peso (COP). Credit cards are often accepted, especially in large cities and hotels. But cash payment is important, as many small shops and rural areas do not accept cards. It is recommended to always have some cash on hand to encounter local markets and taxi rides.
Vaccinations are recommended for Colombia, including Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Malaria prophylaxis is especially important in rural areas. A travel insurance is advisable for every traveler to protect themselves in case of emergency. Make sure that the insurance also covers off-road activities, as these can increase risks.
