Central America Travel and Vacation – Good to know

Visa is not required for all countries. Most travelers from Europe and North America can stay for up to 90 days without a visa. However, it is important to check before traveling if your country has special requirements. For longer stays, a visa online can be applied for. Many Central American countries also offer Visas on Arrival, but the conditions vary.
San José (Costa Rica) is excellent for off-road adventures, with access to spectacular national parks. Alternatively, the International Airport in Guatemala City also offers many possibilities. Both airports provide numerous domestic flights and are ideal for exploring the surrounding adventures by rental car.
The local currency varies: In Costa Rica it is the Colón, in Guatemala the Quetzal. Credit cards are often accepted, however it is advisable to carry cash for rural areas and smaller providers. ATMs are common in cities, but avoid high fees. It is advisable to also keep small amounts in cash ready.
Before departure to Central America, vaccinations for hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus are recommended. A travel insurance is not mandatory, but highly advisable to cover medical costs. Inform yourself in advance about local health requirements and follow the tips from the Ministry of Health. A good travel pharmacy including personal medications can also be helpful.
An international driver's license is recommended for driving in Central America, as local authorities often require this. SIM cards are easy to obtain in most countries; you can find them at airports or in telecommunications stores. Two of the most well-known providers are Claro and Movistar. It is advisable to compare local plans and ensure you are reachable in case of an emergency.
