The Journey

Across the South American continent

This is it, the probably most spectacular South America trip you can participate in. We travel from Cartagena in Colombia to Ushuaia in Argentina, from the Caribbean beach to the Pacific and then to the Atlantic in Tierra del Fuego, crisscrossing through the Andes from north to south, crossing the continent with its extreme contrasts. 13,700 km off-road and on-road through breathtaking landscapes, ancient cultures, and new adventures. Historical destinations, cultural sites, and modern attractions are on our way. Parts of the Pan American Highway and segments of the Dakar Rally, which took place in South America from 2009 to 2019, await us just like dizzying trails off the main roads. If you bring off-road and on-road experience as well as physical fitness and team spirit, you are exactly right for this adventure. Your experienced tour guide and/or co-guide is multilingual, grew up in South America, and is very knowledgeable in conducting adventure trips. When it comes to motorcycle expeditions, we, the certified tour operator OVERCROSS, are experts and have been offering the Trans Africa Expedition since 2016. Ahead of us lie 13,700 adventurous kilometers divided into two stages:

  • Colombia has made great strides in improving its safety situation in recent years. However, there are still some areas that we will not travel through on this motorcycle trip, and your experienced tour guide is well informed about these areas.
  • A motorcycle expedition is a longer and often adventurous journey by motorcycle. Unlike a conventional motorcycle trip, which is more tourist-oriented, an expedition often involves exploring remote places, taking unusual routes, and overcoming challenges. See the Wikipedia link to Expedition on this page for more details.
  • Yes, for a motorcycle trip in South America you need a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after departure and possibly a special visa for the countries you will cross during this motorcycle expedition, depending on your home country. The OVERCROSS team is happy to assist you with the formalities such as applying for a visa.
  • If you are not renting one of our Yamaha Tenere 700 bikes, we recommend a travel enduro or enduro under 1000cc. However, in principle, you can ride any motorcycle you feel comfortable with. The limits are usually those of the rider and not the motorcycle.
  • This motorcycle expedition presents various challenges for you, such as: mental strength, riding long stages, cultural differences, language barriers, technical riding challenges.
  • The road network in South America varies from well-developed highways to unpaved roads in rural areas. The main traffic arteries are generally well-maintained, but in remote areas, road conditions can be more challenging. On our motorcycle expedition, you will experience a mix of different terrains.
  • Many tire manufacturers such as Continental, Metzeler, or Mitas produce high-quality tires for this application. Ultimately, tire choice is a very individual, personal matter. We usually have Heidenau K60 Scout tires mounted on our motorcycles, as this tire has a center strip on the rear tire from a certain size.
  • On the rental bikes from OVERCROSS, you will find an aluminum luggage case system, but you can also choose a soft luggage system.
  • We recommend adding engine protection, crash bars, and hand guards to your motorcycle.
  • You do not need an additional fuel canister; the volume of your standard tank is sufficient for this trip.
  • Yes, for this trip you need a credit card with sufficient coverage and the ability to withdraw cash.
  • Generally, cash is never a bad idea, but you can also withdraw cash during the trip with your credit card.
  • You will receive a packing list for this motorcycle trip before the trip in the tour folder.
  • Depending on the route (South or North), the vehicle must be shipped either to Cartagena (Colombia) or Ushuaia (Argentina). To ensure that all vehicles arrive there on time before the tour starts, they need to be shipped at least 2 months in advance.
