Cambodia is a country where you can still drive a lot on unpaved roads. Both along the Mekong River and in the hinterland, where only a few people live, through small villages, along the many rice fields, and even in the jungle. The highlight is perhaps the stretch through the Cardamom Mountains. Part of this road is still unpaved, which can be quite a challenge, especially after a little rain. Moreover, Cambodia has an impressive history, evidenced by the majestic Angkor Wat, but also the S21 torture chambers and the Killing Fields, which you can visit on this trip. Phnom Penh and Siem Reap are vibrant cities where you can eat well, drink, and get a massage. On our Cambodia motorcycle tour, there are numerous pagodas to admire.

Arrival in Phnom Penh

Our first overnight stay is in the capital Phnom Penh. We have a hotel with a pool right in the center of the city near the Mekong River and the nightlife.

Phnom Penh - Kampong Cham (approx. 120km)

We start the day calmly with a breakfast before receiving a short introduction to this adventurous motorcycle tour. Then we set off and take a ferry across after 15 minutes to leave the hustle and bustle of Phnom Penh behind. This day is a mix of road and terrain with beautiful sections through small villages. We spend the night in the city center of Kampong Cham, right by the Mekong and the restaurants.

Kampong Cham - Kratie (approx. 120km)

We continue our route along the Mekong, where we will reach the Han Chey Temple on some adventurous off-road segments. From here, we enjoy a beautiful view of the Mekong. Along the way, we will have a simple lunch by the roadside. We spend the night in Kratie by the Mekong River.

Kratie - Kampong Thom (approx. 220km)

We leave the hotel and soon take a ferry to the other side, where we will ride on unpaved roads and off the main road for most of the day. The weather will determine the difficulty of the off-road tracks this day. After a possibly exhausting day, we have a cozy hotel with a rooftop terrace and, of course, a bar where we can overlook the city with a beer.

Kampong Thom - Siem Reap (approx. 160km)

After breakfast, we ride towards Siem Reap, regularly leaving the main road to take some great off-road rides. We travel south towards the temple complexes to reach the center of Siem Reap. Here we have a comfortable hotel with a swimming pool to relax, or you can enjoy a wonderful massage at the hotel or in one of the many nearby salons.

Rest day in Siem Reap

Today you have time to visit the grand temple complex of Angkor Wat. The temples of Angkor are a source of inspiration and pride for all Cambodians and also spark the imagination of most visitors. The period of the Angkor Empire extends over approximately 600 years, during which more than 70 temples, palaces, libraries, and other buildings were constructed on an area of 350 km². Actually, Angkor Wat is just one of these temples, but nowadays this name is used to refer to the entire area. To visit all the temples of this gigantic complex, you actually need several days. But your guide can advise you on which temples you should visit at what time and which temples you should definitely not miss.

Siem Reap - Battambang (approx. 170km)

We leave Siem Reap through the south and embark on perhaps the best off-road track of this tour. Many small paths through or past villages slowly bring us to the busy main road, which eventually leads us to Battambang. Battambang is a picturesque town with many colonial houses. Our hotel is located in the center, making it easy to explore the town on foot.

Battambang - Veal Veng (approx. 140km)

If it has rained, today could be a strenuous day as we ride in and through the Cardamom Mountains. Although Cambodia has welcomed tourists for many years, the Cardamom Mountains have not yet been discovered by many foreigners. The mountain range forms the border between Cambodia and Thailand and was long a stronghold of the Khmer Rouge. At the beginning, the gravel roads are still wide and flat, but then they become bumpier and hillier. The agriculturally used plains turn into tropical rainforest. We spend the night in the small village of Veal Veng in a simple guesthouse, where we hold an improvised BBQ with a beer.

Veal Veng - Koh Kong (approx. 170km)

Today, the path can be quite tough again, especially if a rain shower has turned the ground into slippery red mud; then we will slide and skid forward. We take our time on this adventurous red track through the green forest. The inhabited world will be very far away for a while. Therefore, we will have a makeshift lunch on the way. After lunch, we search for the new Chinese road, a pathway made of concrete slabs that will lead us to Koh Kong. If we have time, we will see if we can take a refreshing bath somewhere along the way. Koh Kong is a small place on the coast of the Gulf of Thailand, just a few kilometers from the neighboring country. Here we will spend the night in a hotel in the center with a pool.

Koh Kong - Kampot (approx. 240km)

First, we ride on the main road, then we turn off and ride nicely off the road again, leaving the inhabited world behind. Today's route is long and can therefore vary greatly depending on the weather. Fortunately, the last section to Kampot is back on the road. We spend the night in the center, where the bars and massage salons are located. Many foreigners enjoy their retirement here.

Kampot - Phnom Penh (approx. 170km)

The last riding day gives us some nice routes before we ride back to Phnom Penh on the busy main road. We have the same hotel as at the beginning, so we toast with a nice beer on the rooftop terrace by the pool to a successful tour.

Rest day in Phnom Penh

Today you have time to dive into the history of Cambodia and visit the notorious S21 prison, the torture chambers, and the Killing Fields, which are located just outside the city center.

Departure

Faster than expected, the brilliant Enduro tour The Khmer Trail comes to an end. You will be taken to the airport to begin your journey home or onward.
