Bulgaria Travel and Vacation – Good to know

Visas are not required for most EU citizens; however, travelers from other countries may need a visa. This can be applied for at the Bulgarian embassy before the trip. A visa on arrival is not available. Check the requirements for your nationality in advance and plan the application accordingly.
The Sofia Airport (SOF) is the largest and best-connected airport in Bulgaria. It offers numerous international flights and good connections to other cities in the country. From Sofia, you can easily reach your hotel by bus or taxi. Alternatively, the Burgas Airport (BOJ) is ideal for beach holidays on the Black Sea coast.
The local currency is the Bulgarian Lev (BGN). Credit cards are accepted in most cities, but it is advisable to also carry cash, especially in rural areas. ATMs are widely available. Remember to also try discount negotiations for larger purchases – this is common in Bulgaria and can save you money.
No special vaccinations are required for Bulgaria, but it is recommended to check your basic immunizations (such as tetanus, hepatitis A/B). A travel insurance is also advisable to cover unexpected doctor visits or other issues. Check whether your insurance is valid internationally and covers emergencies.
In order to drive in Bulgaria, you need a valid driver's license from your home country, often an international driver's license is sufficient. If you want to make calls in Bulgarian cities, you can purchase a SIM card in most supermarkets, mobile phone shops, or at the airport. Providers like Vivacom and Telenor offer affordable prepaid rates.
