A visa is necessary for entry into Vietnam unless you are coming from certain countries. You can apply for it online or obtain it upon arrival at an international airport. Carefully check the entry requirements and plan ahead, especially if your stay is longer than 15 days.
The Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City is the busiest and ideal if you are planning off-road trips in the south of Vietnam. Alternatively, the Noi Bai Airport in Hanoi is optimal for the north. Both offer numerous international connections and are well connected to the local transportation network.
The official currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). While some hotels and restaurants accept credit cards, it is advisable to carry cash, especially in rural areas. ATMs are widely available, but fees may apply. Plan ahead to ensure you always have enough cash.
A travel insurance is strongly recommended to protect you against diseases that are prevalent in Vietnam. Known vaccinations are against Hepatitis A and Typhus. Get informed in a timely manner to ensure you are thoroughly protected before you go on your off-road adventure.
To drive in Vietnam, you need an international driver's license along with your national driver's license. Be aware that traffic and road conditions can be somewhat challenging. It is advisable to gain initial experience in urban traffic or to travel with an experienced guide before you venture off-road on your own.
You can easily buy a local SIM card at the airport or in stores. Providers like Viettel, Mobifone, and Vinaphone have affordable offers for tourists. Make sure to have your passport with you, as it may be required for the purchase. This way, you are well connected at all times while exploring the breathtaking landscapes of Vietnam.
