ADVENTURE-TOURS · KENYA
Tanzania safari highlights, an okavango delta safari, and a full serengeti safari are the crown jewels of this 57-day africa overland tour from Cape Town to Nairobi.
The Journey
Tanzania safari adventures and a full serengeti safari make this 57-day africa overland tour one of the most thorough group expedition itineraries on the continent. Departing Cape Town, the route covers Namib Desert dunes, Etosha, and an okavango delta safari by mokoro, then the Chobe River and Victoria Falls. South Luangwa and Lake Malawi follow before the ngorongoro crater safari and serengeti safari tour in Tanzania. The masai mara safari tour in Kenya precedes gorilla trekking uganda. The tour ends in Nairobi.
South Africa
The africa overland tour begins in Cape Town, heading north through the Cederberg and Namaqualand before crossing into Namibia.
The africa overland tour departs Cape Town with a final look back at Table Mountain from across Table Bay. The route north passes a traditional farm stall in the Cederberg region where homemade biltong, rusks, and seasonal produce line the shelves. The Cederberg mountains are also home to the Rooibos bush, native to these slopes and famous worldwide as an herbal tea alternative. Dinner at the overnight stop introduces the group to South African farm hospitality.
Meals: Lunch, Dinner | Included: Traditional dinner
Namibia
From the Orange River to the Namib dunes, Etosha, and Swakopmund, Namibia covers the first major overland safari africa stretch through the continent's most dramatic desert landscapes.
Crossing into Namaqualand, the landscape opens into semi-desert scrub that signals the first real encounter with Africa's arid interior. After a supply stop in Springbok, the truck continues to a camp on the banks of the Orange River. In spring months (July to September), the surrounding plains bloom with wildflowers that have made this region internationally known. The riverside camp is the first real overland night on this cape town to nairobi tour.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
An optional morning canoe trip on the Orange River starts the day on the water before the group heads inland toward the Fish River Canyon. At over 160 km long and 550 meters deep, the Fish River Canyon is the largest canyon in Africa and the second largest in the world. The walk along the rim at midday is a first major highlight of the overland tour africa route. Tonight the group camps near Keetmanshoop.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Ais-Ais Hot Springs
The morning begins at the Quiver Tree Forest and Giants Playground near Keetmanshoop, where ancient aloe trees grow among dolerite boulders stacked into natural mazes. The afternoon is a long drive deeper into the Namib Desert, passing through grassland and red sand as the landscape transitions toward the western dune fields. The camp tonight sits at the threshold of the dune fields, and the silence of the desert is complete by nightfall.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Quiver Tree Forest walk
An early start gets the group into Namib-Naukluft National Park before sunrise. The climb up Dune 45 rewards with a panoramic view as the light shifts across the red dune crests. A 4x4 transfer follows into the deep park to reach Sossusvlei and the ghostly white pan of Deadvlei, where centuries-old dead trees stand in preserved contrast against the surrounding dune walls. This is the visual centerpiece of the africa overland camping tour.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Dune 45 climb, 4x4 to Sossusvlei
Leaving the Namib behind, the route crosses the Tropic of Capricorn with a photo stop before reaching the Atlantic coast. A brief stop at the Walvis Bay lagoon offers a chance to see flamingos feeding in the shallow water before the group arrives in Swakopmund. A local guide leads a desert excursion in the afternoon. This evening the group dines at a local restaurant in this coastal town with a strong German colonial heritage.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Desert walk, restaurant dinner
Swakopmund has two full days of optional activities on offer. Choices include sandboarding on the coastal dunes, quad biking, skydiving over the desert, a dolphin catamaran cruise from Walvis Bay, and a guided tour of the Skeleton Coast. German-era bakeries and cafes line the town center for those who prefer to explore on foot. Swakopmund is the best-equipped base town of the entire overland safari africa route.
Meals: Breakfast | Optional: Sandboarding, quad biking, skydiving, dolphin cruise
The truck heads north from Swakopmund along the coast before turning inland toward Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain at 2,573 meters. A guided hike through the Tsisab River gorge leads to the White Lady, one of over 45,000 San rock paintings in the area, estimated at around 2,000 years old. The paintings offer direct insight into the shamanistic rituals of the Khoi San people who inhabited this region for thousands of years.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Brandberg rock art hike
Today's drive from Brandberg passes through the Kunene region and continues to the southern entrance of Etosha National Park. Along the way the route passes through Twyfelfontein, where 2,500 rock engravings dating back 6,000 years make it one of the largest concentrations of rock art in Africa, and the nearby Petrified Forest. An afternoon game drive in the overland truck begins the three-day Etosha section of this serengeti masai mara safari-caliber itinerary.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Petrified Forest, Twyfelfontein, afternoon game drive
Etosha National Park covers 18,000 square kilometers of salt pan, savanna, and woodland in northern Namibia. The second day in the park is a full day game drive searching the pan edges and waterholes for lions, cheetahs, elephants, giraffes, and the rare black rhinoceros. No two days on safari are the same, and Etosha's waterholes offer some of the most reliable big game viewing of the entire africa adventure tour.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Full-day safari
The third and final morning in Etosha begins at leisure. The Okaukuejo waterhole is active at dawn and regularly draws rhino, elephant, and lion. After lunch, the truck boards and heads east toward the Namutoni camp with an afternoon game drive through the eastern section of the park. The route through Etosha on this overland tour africa covers three distinct camp zones of the park.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Afternoon safari
Leaving Etosha behind, the truck heads northeast toward the Kavango River and the town of Divundu, entering the vast Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA). This cross-border conservation zone spans five nations and is one of the largest in the world. The drive passes through increasingly green and populated landscape as the vegetation shifts from Etosha's dry savanna to the lush riverine forest of the Kavango.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A morning boat trip on the Kavango River drifts past papyrus banks where hippos surface and colorful bee-eaters perch on low branches. The water is calm and the bird life rich along this quiet stretch of the Namibia-Angola border river. An optional afternoon game drive enters Mahangu National Park, a small reserve with high elephant and buffalo density. This is the last full day in Namibia before crossing into Botswana.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Kavango boat trip
Botswana
The okavango delta safari, Savuti game drives, and the Chobe River make Botswana the wildlife heart of this africa overland camping tour.
The border crossing into Botswana leads directly toward Maun, the gateway town to the Okavango Delta. The drive covers a long stretch through the flat Kalahari scrubland before Maun appears. Preparations begin for the two-night delta excursion: the overland truck is left in Maun while the group transfers into smaller 4x4 safari vehicles loaded with camping gear for the okavango delta safari that starts tomorrow.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Early risers can join an optional scenic flight over the delta before the group transfers to the Khwai Conservation Area in 4x4 vehicles. The okavango delta safari begins this afternoon with a mokoro excursion through the reed channels of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The traditional dugout canoe glides silently through papyrus beds where hippos rest and fish eagles call overhead. Camp tonight is a mobile fly camp in the delta.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Mokoro excursion | Optional: Delta scenic flight
A full-day 4x4 game drive covers the Savuti Game Reserve, which borders the Okavango to the west and Chobe National Park to the east. Savuti is known for its predator density, particularly lions and wild dogs that follow the seasonal movements of large herbivore herds across the open plains. The terrain is varied, from wetland edges to open savanna woodland, and this game drive is one of the most productive of the entire trip.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Full-day safari in Savuti
Returning to Maun in the overland truck, the drive east toward Nata crosses flat Botswana savanna and Kalahari salt pans. In the afternoon, a guided excursion visits the Nata Sanctuary, a wetland and pan system that acts as a breeding ground for thousands of pelicans, flamingos, and migratory waterfowl. The vast open landscape here is characteristic of inland Botswana and contrasts sharply with the delta ecosystems visited the previous two days.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Nata pans excursion
The drive from Nata to Kasane crosses the edge of the Kalahari before reaching the Chobe River. After lunch, the group boards a riverboat for an afternoon cruise on the Chobe River, where breeding herds of hundreds of elephants cross the water in spectacular fashion. Hippos surface alongside the boat, crocodiles line the banks, and the bird life is extraordinary. This is one of the highest concentrations of wildlife on any river in Africa.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Chobe River boat cruise
Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls marks the transition from southern to eastern Africa on this overland safari africa route.
Crossing into Zimbabwe, the truck reaches Victoria Falls by midday. The falls, known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders), drop 108 meters along a 1.7 km wide curtain of water into the Batoka Gorge. The afternoon is free for a walk along the viewing paths at the edge of the falls. Optional activities include bungee jumping from the historic bridge, helicopter flights, and sunset Zambezi River cruises. A dinner at a local restaurant rounds out the evening.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Bungee jumping, heli flight, river cruise
A second full day at Victoria Falls allows time for white-water rafting on the Zambezi River below the falls, one of the most popular Grade 5 commercial raft runs in Africa. The afternoon transfer crosses the bridge into Livingstone, Zambia, where the group spends the night. Those choosing a morning transfer at 8:00am can explore Livingstone before the group reconvenes. The transfer between the two towns is included in the tour price.
Meals: Breakfast | Optional: Rafting, bungee, helicopter, sunset cruise
Zambia
From Livingstone to South Luangwa, Zambia offers a wildlife-rich overland stretch with big cat safaris and rural cultural encounters.
Departing Livingstone early, the drive follows the Zambezi corridor through rural Zambia toward Chirundu on the Zimbabwe border. The landscape shifts to colorful roadside markets and farming villages as the truck covers ground through the heart of Zambia. The overnight lodge sits on the banks of the Kafue River, offering a peaceful setting after several active days at the falls. Guides brief the group on the upcoming days in East Africa.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A free day at the Kafue River lodge offers optional activities including tiger fishing on the Zambezi, a boat safari in the Lower Zambezi National Park, birdwatching in the riverine forest, and a walk to a local baobab forest and bat cave. The area is remote and unhurried, with the river providing the pace. This is one of the few days without a long drive, giving the group a chance to rest before the push toward the kenya safari package section of the route.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Fishing, river safari, birding
The drive east from Lusaka follows the Great East Road through rural Zambia toward Petauke, crossing the mighty Luangwa River along the way. A stop at the Luangwa market introduces local produce including masau fruits, papyrus baskets, and hand-carved wooden animals. The roadside market reflects the agricultural heartland of eastern Zambia and sets the scene for the South Luangwa National Park wildlife section ahead.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Market visit
South Luangwa National Park is one of Africa's top-tier wildlife destinations and a highlight of any overland safari africa route. The morning brings a stop at Mulberry Mongoose, a curio shop where local women produce handcrafted jewelry from bush materials. Afternoon and sunset drives cover the floodplain edges where leopards are frequently spotted at dusk. The park's high big cat density makes it one of the most productive wildlife days of the entire trip.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Mulberry Mongoose visit
A full day in South Luangwa National Park begins with an optional morning walk safari through the bush with an armed ranger — available during the dry season from April to December. The afternoon drive leads to a sundowner stop on the riverbank before transitioning to a night safari with spotlights. Leopards, civets, genets, and African wild cats are regularly sighted after dark. South Luangwa is considered one of Africa's finest parks for the dedicated africa adventure tour traveler.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Sunset safari | Optional: Walking safari
Malawi
Lake Malawi provides three nights of rest, snorkeling, and village walks between the Zambia and Tanzania safari sections.
The drive into Malawi passes through the Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve, where elephants and zebras are often visible from the road. By afternoon the truck reaches the shores of Lake Malawi, the southernmost lake in the East African Rift system. One of the ten largest lakes in the world, it stretches 500 km along Malawi's western border and holds more fish species than any other lake on Earth. The first evening on the lakeside is one of the most atmospheric of the whole cape town to nairobi tour.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
A free day on Lake Malawi is for swimming, snorkeling among cichlid fish, and resting in the shade. An optional guided hike leads to the nearby Dwanbazi Falls, a 30-minute drive from the beach hotel, with views from the top over the lakeshore landscape. The lake is safe for swimming in this area and the clarity of the water makes snorkeling rewarding. The warm heart of Africa earns its nickname along this peaceful stretch of lake.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Waterfall hike
The truck continues north along the lakeshore for most of the day, camping again on the Lake Malawi shoreline. The afternoon village walk with the guide introduces the group to local fishing communities whose lives revolve entirely around the lake. The evening brings a sunset over the water from the beach, one of the quietly memorable moments of the africa overland camping tour before the pace picks up again in Tanzania.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Village walk
Tanzania
Tanzania safari highlights include Zanzibar, Stone Town, Mikumi, and the crown jewels of the ngorongoro crater safari and full serengeti safari.
Crossing into Tanzania, the truck heads for the Utengule Coffee Lodge in the southern highlands near Mbeya. The highland scenery changes from the flat lakeshore to rolling green tea and coffee country as altitude increases. The lodge is set on a working coffee estate and provides one of the more atmospheric overnight stops of the tanzania safari journey. This evening is a good opportunity to rest before the next push north.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
Before leaving the southern highlands, the group stops at a local coffee plantation near Iringa for a guided walk through the growing and harvesting process. Freshly roasted beans are tasted directly at the farm. The drive then climbs the Great Rift Valley escarpment with panoramic views opening to the north. The afternoon covers open tanzania safari territory as the truck pushes toward the Mikumi region.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Coffee plantation visit
A brief stop at the Baobab Valley introduces Tanzania's iconic trees before the group reaches Mikumi National Park, the country's fourth largest and part of the vast 75,000 sq km Selous ecosystem. An optional game drive in Mikumi can produce lion, giraffe, elephant, and zebra in the open grasslands. The park sits directly on the main highway and offers an accessible introduction to tanzania safari wildlife ahead of the northern parks.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Mikumi game drive
Additional optional safaris or cultural trips in Mikumi are available this morning before the truck heads east to Dar es Salaam. Tanzania's largest city and main port is the departure point for the Zanzibar ferry. The group checks into accommodation near the ferry terminal for an early departure the following morning. Dar es Salaam's waterfront and Msasani Bay offer a glimpse into the rhythm of East African coastal city life.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
An early ferry from Dar es Salaam reaches Zanzibar Island in about two hours. Upon arrival in Stone Town, the group checks into a hotel in the historic UNESCO-listed quarter. Stone Town's maze of narrow alleys, carved wooden doors, and Arabic-influenced architecture reflects the island's centuries as a hub of the spice trade and Indian Ocean commerce. The afternoon is free to explore on foot.
Meals: Breakfast | Included: Zanzibar ferry
The morning begins with a walking tour of Stone Town, including the house where Freddie Mercury was born, the old fort, and the former slave market. After the city tour, the group travels north to the beach base for two nights. Along the way, a guided spice plantation tour shows how cloves, vanilla, cardamom, and cinnamon are grown and harvested on the island that gave Zanzibar its reputation as the Spice Islands.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Stone Town walk, spice tour
A free day on Zanzibar is for watersports, snorkeling, dhow sailing, or simply resting on the white sand beach. The warm Indian Ocean water is clear and calm on the sheltered west coast, while the east coast beaches offer surf. Jozani Forest, home to the endemic red colobus monkey, is a popular optional excursion. Stone Town is also accessible for those wanting more cultural exploration of this unique island between the serengeti safari sections.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Jozani Forest, dhow trip
The ferry returns the group to Dar es Salaam where the overland truck is waiting. The drive north along the coast reaches Bagamoyo by late afternoon, a town that was once East Africa's most important trading hub and the start of the historic slave and ivory routes inland. The waterfront shows remnants of Swahili culture and German colonial-era architecture. The group settles in for the night before the drive toward northern Tanzania and the Serengeti region.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The drive from the coastal lowlands climbs gradually into the highlands as the truck passes through Moshi at the foot of Kilimanjaro. On a clear day, the snow-capped peak of Africa's highest mountain is visible from the road. The landscape shifts from coastal palms and baobabs to highland farmland producing coffee, banana, and maize. An optional afternoon visit to a local coffee plantation or guided bicycle tour in the Kilimanjaro foothills is available.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The route enters the northern tanzania safari circuit as the truck heads west toward Karatu, the base camp for the Ngorongoro and Serengeti excursion. A stop at the Mto wa Mbu market introduces local produce including red bananas, rice, and fresh vegetables grown in the shadow of the Rift Valley escarpment. The market town lies on the main road into the Serengeti National Park and is a busy crossroads for overland safari traffic.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Mto wa Mbu market visit
An early pickup takes the group in 4x4 safari vehicles for the ngorongoro crater safari. Descending 600 meters into the caldera, the morning drive covers the 260 sq km crater floor where lion prides rest in the open, black rhino graze near the soda lake, and flamingo flocks line the shore. In the afternoon, the convoy continues to the Serengeti Seronera region, arriving at the tented camp in the heart of the world's most famous national park.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Full-day 4x4 excursion Ngorongoro + Serengeti
A full-day serengeti safari through the Seronera region is the day most travelers remember longest. The central grasslands are home to resident lion prides, cheetah mothers with cubs, and leopards resting in acacia trees throughout the year. The Seronera River is a reliable big cat corridor and the afternoon light over the open plains creates perfect photography conditions. An optional hot air balloon flight at dawn over the Serengeti is available to book in advance.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Full-day serengeti safari | Optional: Balloon flight
Leaving the Serengeti with full memory cards and vivid wildlife memories, the truck returns to Arusha for the night. The city serves as the tourism hub for northern Tanzania and sits between Kilimanjaro and the Ngorongoro highlands. The evening is a chance to reflect on the complete serengeti safari tour experience before the route continues north into Kenya. Optional curio shopping or restaurant dining is available in Arusha.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Kenya
The masai mara safari tour and Lake Nakuru game drive complete the Kenya section before the group enters Uganda.
Crossing the Tanzania-Kenya border, the truck reaches Nairobi by afternoon. The capital is a bustling metropolis and the logistics hub for the upcoming masai mara safari tour. The Masai Mara visit takes place in smaller safari vehicles rather than the overland truck, so the group packs an overnight bag this afternoon. Towel, clothing, toiletries, and camping gear for two nights are all that's needed for the Mara section.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
The masai mara safari tour begins with the drive southwest from Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley to the Mara. The world-famous reserve covers 1,510 sq km of open grassland and forms the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem. Arriving in the afternoon, the first game drive brings the classic Mara landscape into view: vast acacia savanna patrolled by lion, cheetah, elephant, buffalo, and resident wildebeest herds.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Masai Mara game drive
A full day on the masai mara safari tour covers the rolling grasslands where all members of the Big Five can be found. The Mara River is the focal point for wildebeest crossings during the Great Migration season (July to October), when hundreds of thousands of wildebeest plunge through crocodile-lined water. Year-round, the resident lion prides, cheetah families, and elephant herds make the Mara one of the top wildlife destinations of any kenya safari package.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Full-day Masai Mara safari
Leaving the Mara, the route heads north to Lake Nakuru National Park for an afternoon game drive. The compact 188 sq km park in the floor of the Kenya Rift Valley is home to both white and black rhinoceros, large leopard and lion populations, and the flamingo flocks that have made it internationally famous. Originally established as a bird sanctuary in 1961, Lake Nakuru was upgraded to a national park in 1968 and remains a classic kenya safari package highlight.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Lake Nakuru game drive
Uganda
Uganda delivers chimpanzee trekking, gorilla trekking uganda in Bwindi, Murchison Falls, and Nile adventures on the final overland leg.
Crossing into Uganda, the truck reaches Jinja, the country's second-largest city and the source of the Nile. The Victoria Nile begins its 6,695 km journey to Egypt from Lake Victoria here, and the town has built an adventure tourism industry around the river. The border crossing from Kenya into Uganda is straightforward and the drive through the fertile green landscape of southern Uganda marks a noticeable shift from the drier Kenyan highlands.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
After a stop in Kampala, Uganda's capital, the truck heads northwest toward Murchison Falls National Park, the largest national park in the country. An optional stop at the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers a walking encounter with white rhinos being reintroduced to Uganda. The park is named for the Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile is forced through a seven-meter-wide rock slot before dropping 43 meters into the river below.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Ziwa Rhino Walk
The Budongo Forest Reserve is the largest mahogany forest in East Africa and home to an estimated 600-700 chimpanzees. Morning chimpanzee trekking with a certified guide locates one of the habituated communities for close observation in the forest undergrowth. A Nile boat cruise at Murchison Falls completes the day, putting passengers at river level with hippos, Nile crocodiles, and African fish eagles against the backdrop of the thundering falls.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Chimpanzee trekking (half-day), Nile boat ride
Leaving Masindi, the truck drives south toward the edge of Queen Elizabeth National Park. Tonight's accommodation sits on a hill overlooking Lake Kikorongo with views across the wetland to the distant Rwenzori Mountains. The drive through central Uganda passes through productive farmland and small towns, a reminder of Uganda's agricultural wealth and the density of settlement that makes it one of Africa's most populated nations per square kilometer.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Crossing the equator again heading south, the truck reaches the scenic Lake Bunyonyi in southwestern Uganda. The lake, surrounded by terraced hillsides and dotted with 29 islands, is one of the most beautiful landscapes in East Africa. The group receives a briefing this evening on what to expect during the gorilla trekking uganda excursion over the following days. Permit availability determines the exact timing and location of the gorilla trek.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The gorilla trekking uganda experience in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is the emotional peak of the entire expedition. Permits are strictly limited, and tracking teams lead small groups through dense highland forest to find habituated mountain gorilla families. With approximately 1,000 individuals remaining worldwide, this encounter has direct conservation value: permit fees fund protection programs and support local communities around the national park.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Gorilla trekking, Golden monkey trekking, Rwanda day trip
Two days are allocated for the gorilla trekking uganda window to ensure all group members get a chance to trek regardless of permit availability. The free day at Lake Bunyonyi offers hiking on the island trails, mountain biking through the surrounding hills, or a visit to a Batwa Pygmy community. An optional day trip across the border into Rwanda is also available. The atmosphere at Bunyonyi is peaceful and the views across the lake are remarkable.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Gorilla trekking, Pygmy visit, Rwanda day trip
Heading northeast, the truck reaches Lake Mburo National Park, Uganda's smallest savanna national park and the only place in Uganda where impala are found. The park covers 260 sq km of acacia savanna, wetlands, and forest around the lake shore. With over 350 recorded bird species, Lake Mburo is particularly rewarding for birders seeking the rare shoebill stork. A game drive this afternoon is an optional extra in this compact but wildlife-diverse reserve.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The drive back east toward Jinja covers the fertile Ankole region, passing through the home territory of the long-horned Ankole cattle that graze the green hillsides. Arriving in Jinja, the group crosses the equator for the final time with a traditional Coriolis effect demonstration at the marked latitude line. Jinja's Nile-front position opens up a range of optional adventure activities on Africa's longest river this afternoon.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Included: Equator crossing
A full free day in Jinja is the final adventure day of the overland safari africa route. White-water rafting on the Nile covers some of the most consistent Grade 4-5 rapids on the river, running about 30 km from the source to the take-out point. Kayaking, quad biking along the Nile banks, horse riding, and a source-of-the-Nile cruise are all available. The guide helps arrange preferred activities for the group or individuals.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner | Optional: Rafting, kayaking, quad biking, Nile cruise
Kenya (Return)
The final two days return overland from Uganda to Nairobi, completing the 57-day cape town to nairobi tour.
The return leg to Kenya crosses the border and heads south toward Eldoret, Kenya's fifth-largest city at 2,100 meters elevation in the Great Rift Valley highlands. The high altitude of the region is famous as the training ground for Kenya's long-distance runners. The long drive across Uganda and into western Kenya provides a final view of the diverse agricultural landscapes that have bordered this africa overland tour from Cape Town to here.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
The final drive south from Eldoret drops into the Great Rift Valley before climbing back to Nairobi. Arriving in the afternoon, the group reflects on 57 days through nine countries, covering thousands of kilometers from the Cape to the equator. From the tanzania safari and serengeti safari to the gorilla trekking uganda and okavango delta safari, this africa overland camping tour ends where the continent's wildlife corridors finally point north toward home. The tour concludes on arrival in Nairobi.
