OVERVIEW
Guided Winter Tour Off-road Trip in the Carpathians - Romania
Armed with shovels, winches, and snow chains, we set off in our off-road vehicles to the snow-covered heart of Transylvania - a region that shows its absolutely magical side in winter garb. The fresh powder snow crunches beneath our tires, a radiant blue sky stretches above us, and majestic, snow-covered peaks rise all around.
Our route takes us through the impressive Cindrel Mountains, where lonely off-road tracks, snowy forests, and spectacular panoramic views await us. A very special stop awaits us at Lake Bâlea, where we will visit the famous Ice Church - a true winter fairy tale made of ice and snow like in the Disney film Frozen, in the midst of the rugged high mountain world.
We continue through the wild romantic Lotrului Mountains and the Șureanu Mountains, which, with their dense forests and hidden valleys, are perfect for real off-road adventures.
We are starting the off-road winter adventure in Romania!
The sun is shining from the clear, ice-blue sky as we leave the heavily snow-covered forest behind us. Our 4x4 vehicles carve their way through the crunching powder snow. The tire tracks sparkle in the winter sun like diamonds. It's not an easy path, but that's exactly what makes it exciting: pure adventure, nature, and team spirit!! Whether planned or unplanned - our breaks are welcome opportunities to enjoy the enchanting panorama, catch our breath, and take photos. When we get stuck again, the shovel comes into play - or the winch. But we help each other, laugh, curse, and celebrate every meter we conquer together :-) The snow chains bite into the fresh snow, but where the sun softens it, it gets slippery - challenge accepted! Sometimes fallen trees block our way, having collapsed under the weight of the snow. But with a chainsaw in our luggage and a strong team, even that is quickly taken care of. No obstacle keeps us back for long - we push through. Don’t be surprised if suddenly a horse-drawn carriage with two shepherds appears in front of us. They were at their remote alpine hut - and tell us that wolves were wandering very close the night before. Curiously, we follow their trail - and indeed: fresh wolf tracks in the snow, clearly visible. A moment that gives you goosebumps. But the Carpathians have even more to offer: animal tracks weave through the snow like an invisible network. We discover a herd of deer at the forest edge, watch a fox hiding in the bushes.
Daily program: Carpathian Adventure in the Snow
Day 1
We take a well-deserved break, in the middle of the snowy solitude, surrounded by nothing but silence, nature, and the crackling snow under our boots. In no time, a small fire flickers to give us warmth. The thermoses with hot tea and strong coffee are passed around, hands gratefully reaching for them. The scent of fresh bratwurst sizzling over the flames fills the clear winter air.
Day 2
A small campfire, a strong coffee, good food, and great company – another special moment that can only be gifted by the winter Carpathians. After we have conquered the pass, the descent into the valley begins. Passing a frozen lake that glimmers under a sparkling blanket of snow in the evening sun – almost like a diamond between rock and forest. Use this unique viewpoint to take a great memory photo. When we finally reach our guesthouse high up on the mountain, a scene unfolds before us as if from a winter fairy tale: The small mountain village deep down in the valley is already in the darkness of night, only the warm lights of the lanterns shine sporadically between the houses. A peaceful, quiet sight. A final glance at the surrounding mountains and then it’s into the warm room. We enjoy a typical Romanian meal, savoring the best smoked trout from the region. By the fireplace, we relish the delicious mulled wine and look forward to the coming days in the Carpathians.
Day 3
On our route, we traverse the deeply snow-covered Cindrel Mountains, the remote Lotrului Mountains, and the almost forgotten Șureanu Mountains. In doing so, we follow ancient paths, wind our way through quiet forests, and ascend snowy heights. We drive over the historic Hohe Rinne (Păltiniș) to Valea Frumoasă - Obârșia Lotrului, passing the impressive Vidra Lake, which spreads like a jewel among the mountains. Depending on the snow conditions, our trail continues to the secluded Petrimanu Lake. In the village of Polovragi, we dive into the mysterious underworld of the region - visiting the spectacular stalactite cave that extends over 10km deep underground.
Day 4
An absolute highlight of the trip is the visit to the famous Ice Hotel and Ice Church at Lake Bâlea, at over 2,000m altitude: A frosty fairy-tale world that you won't forget anytime soon. Our daily stages usually range between 40 and 80km - depending on weather conditions and snow conditions. The altitude can reach up to 1,700m or even beyond. The route remains flexible - we always adjust it to the local conditions, because: In the Carpathians, nature determines the way.
