OVERVIEW
Enduro motorcycle tour: Libya Africa Sahara
The Sahara Adventure Libya is not a standard "motorcycle trip" but a "guided enduro expedition" into one of the most beautiful regions of the Libyan Sahara. Desert as far as the eye can see, less suitable for sports enduros, but rather for travel enduros with a 21-inch front wheel with robust knobs!
Pure motorcycle adventure, the enduro journey through the western Sahara of Libya leads to the Mandara Lakes.
Foreword to the Enduro Libya Desert Challenge
Before the Arab Spring, we last went on an adventure trip to Algeria and Libya: This re-launched expedition is therefore only roughly described here, as we will adjust the routing individually to the expedition group and the conditions on site. The description below of the Libya Desert Challenge is deliberately very 'superficial', a mega-tour in terms of driving and landscape, primarily aimed at experienced enduro riders who have been in the desert before. This African trip can be booked as a two-week flight trip or a three-week ferry trip from Italy to Tunisia and overland from Tunis to Tripoli. The following tour description, as well as all other adventurous desert tours far from civilization, is planned as an expedition, so no package motorcycle trip for beginners! The expedition through Libya is a demanding tour over the highest dunes to the phenomenal highlights of the Sahara. For experienced enduro riders, it is an absolute must, and for former Tunisia participants, it is rather an easy riding challenge in the sand!
Daily program: Libya Desert Challenge Expedition
Start of the Libya Desert Challenge
One week before the official start of the trip, the motorcycles are loaded in Tübingen. From the OVERCROSS headquarters, we start with the support vehicle towards the ferry port in Genoa. There, in the afternoon, is the second meeting point for the participants of the Libya Desert Challenge. Together we board the ferry – we leave Europe and head towards North Africa.
Through the Hammada al Hamrah and the Erg Urbari to the Mandara Lakes - Water!
At the last supply station, we refill our supplies one last time. Our tour guides, who speak Arabic, English, and German, take care of the final approvals and have them signed off by the local authorities. Then the next chapter begins: We dive into the endless expanse of the Sahara – following the former smuggler route towards the south. From eight motorcycle participants onwards, a second pickup accompanies us for fuel supply. This way, all riders are supplied with enough gasoline for the outbound and return journey – even away from any gas stations. And don't worry: so far, we have not left anyone behind. 😉 We cross the Hammada al Hamrah on rough gravel and stony paths. Far away from civilization, our machines pull for kilometer after kilometer in a southeastern direction until we reach the northernmost dunes of the Idhan Awbari. Further through the Erg Ubari. Along gigantic dunes, we find our way in the sea of sand. It is the hardest and most beautiful stage. After two to three days, we will reach the Mandara Lakes and recover from the exertion.
Al Awaynat - A quick ride
The coming days in the Sahara will be anything but ordinary – they will be 'out of the box'. This Enduro expedition will take us over several days deep into the vastness of the desert, far from any civilization. Our two tour guides have more than ten years of Sahara experience and know the local conditions like the back of their hand. But even with the best preparation, it remains an expedition – not a classic motorcycle trip. This means: additional organizational, logistical, and safety requirements – and that is precisely why an additional online tour guide via satellite connection accompanies us on this tour, permanently connected as a backup and background team. We reach the last dune crests over fast desert tracks. Before us unfolds an almost unfamiliar sight: roads, houses, civilization. About a 300-kilometer asphalt stage leads us to Al Awaynat, where we refill our supplies one last time – before we dive back into the magical silence of the desert.
Offroad Adventure Mandara Lakes
The days in the south of the Libyan Sahara are guaranteed to be an unforgettable experience, which according to statements from participants from earlier expeditions 'will remain forever'. Dusty tracks along the Libyan border accompany us. Over the last dunes, we leave the seemingly endless Sahara on fast tracks towards the north. We reach the former 'hub of caravan trade' Ghadames. Our guided motorcycle trip through Libya is coming to an end. From Ghadames, we head north, back to Tunisia. In Sidi Bouzid, our friend Rouf is already waiting for us with a delicious dinner, before we go to the last overnight stay in an unusual 'luxury hotel' with an infinity pool!
Hinweis: An diesem Tag gibt es oft Unklarheiten zur Navigationsstrecke und den wechselnden Sandbedingungen. Klärungsbedarf besteht auch bezüglich der Übernachtung im Luxushotel. mehr erfahren
Genoa – Tübingen … and Africa in our minds
We reach Tunis, still have time to wander through the souks (bazaars), before we end the evening with a shisha (water pipe). The ferry leaves Africa behind, and we are on board with the greatest treasure that cannot be taken from you: A massive load of beautiful images and vivid memories from the sensational Libya Desert Challenge expedition.
Conclusion
We deliberately forgo luxury and costly supply trucks on these motorcycle journeys into the Sahara. The motorcycle adventure trips focus on experiencing; during this special motorcycle expedition, the name 'Libya Desert Challenge' is the program! The motorcycle trip participants must be flexible and explore new paths with us. The course of a motorcycle expedition is not necessarily a flawless daily program like on a package tour; therefore.....EXPEDITION! This is intentional, as we believe that an adventure can only be experienced and cannot be planned. The partly chaotic conditions and circumstances that await us on-site also lead to these so-called adventure experiences that are typical for Africa. The tour guides who are on tour with us are well acquainted with North Africa and familiar with the customs of the country. What we offer you is pure adventure, with off-road vehicles or motorcycles.
