Guatemala Travel and Vacation – Good to know
Essential information for your trip
Visa information for Guatemala
German citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. For longer stays, you must apply for a visa. The visa is not available on arrival and must be applied for in advance through the embassy. Ensure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry.
Best airport for arrival
The La Aurora International Airport in Guatemala City is the country's main airport and the best place to arrive. It offers numerous international connections. From there, you can easily rent a motorcycle or use public transport to reach your destination. Plan sufficient time for entry, as checks may sometimes take longer.
Local currency and payment methods
The local currency is the Quetzal (GTQ). Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but it is advisable to also carry cash, as many shops and markets accept cash only. ATMs are widespread in the larger cities, but check your bank's fees for cash withdrawals.
Vaccinations and travel insurance
Vaccinations are not mandatory, but recommendations include hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus. A travel insurance is strongly recommended to cover medical expenses and any potential repatriation. Check current health risks and consultations in your home country for comprehensive protection measures before you travel.
Driver's license requirements
To drive in Guatemala, you need a valid driver's license that is written in English or Spanish. An international driver's license may be helpful but is not mandatory. Check the insurance requirements of your motorcycle rental regarding additional requirements or restrictions. Drive defensively, as traffic and road conditions can vary.
Acquisition of a SIM card
SIM cards can be purchased at mobile phone shops or at airports. Common providers are Tigo or Claro, which offer prepaid credit. Make sure your phone is unlocked to use local SIM cards. Compare rates for data and calls to choose the best plan for your needs.
