German citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. For longer stays, you must apply for a visa. The visa is not available upon arrival, but must be applied for in advance through the embassy. Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond the date of entry.
The International Airport La Aurora in Guatemala City is the country's main airport and the best arrival place. It offers numerous international connections. From there, you can easily rent a motorcycle or use public transportation to reach your destination. Allow enough time for entry, as checks can sometimes take longer.
The local currency is the Quetzal (GTQ). Credit cards are accepted in most hotels and restaurants, but it is advisable to also have cash on hand, as many shops and markets only accept cash. ATMs are widely available in larger cities, but check with your financial institution for fees on cash withdrawals.
Vaccinations are not mandatory, but recommendations include hepatitis A, typhoid, and tetanus. A travel insurance is strongly recommended to cover medical costs and possible return flights. Before traveling, inform yourself about current health risks and consultations in your home country for comprehensive protective measures.
To drive in Guatemala, you need a valid driver's license that is written in English or Spanish. An international driver's license may be beneficial but is not required.
