Lesotho Travel and Vacation – Good to know

German citizens need a visa for their stay in Lesotho, which must be applied for in advance. There is no option to obtain a visa upon arrival. Information on how to apply can be found on the website of the Lesotho embassy. Make sure to allow enough time to obtain the visa well before your travel date!
The best airport to reach Lesotho is the Moshoeshoe I International Airport in Maseru, which offers flights from Johannesburg. Alternatively, you can travel through South Africa and then drive or take a bus to Lesotho. Keep in mind that the roads in the mountains are often less developed, so plan enough time!
The currency in Lesotho is the Lesotho Loti (LSL), which is pegged to the South African Rand. Credit cards are accepted at some places, but bring cash for local markets and smaller shops. ATMs are available in larger cities, but make sure to have enough cash, especially for trips to rural areas.
A travel insurance is recommended in Lesotho to cover unexpected medical costs. Recommended vaccinations are Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and Rabies. Check with your doctor which vaccinations are advisable for your trip. Remember to bring medication for common ailments, as these can be hard to find in remote areas.
