Eswatini (Swaziland) Travel and Vacation – Good to know

German citizens do not need a visa for stays of up to 30 days in Eswatini. For longer stays, a visa is required, which can be applied for online or through the embassy. There is no option to obtain a visa on arrival, so make sure that all necessary documents are taken care of in advance.
The King Mswati III International Airport in Sikhuphe is the best airport to travel to Eswatini. It is located about 30 km from Mbabane, the capital. Flights from various international cities operate here. Make sure to check the current flight status and possible connections to plan your trip.
The official currency is the Lilangeni (SZL), and also the South African Rand is accepted. While credit cards can often be used in larger cities and hotels, you should bring enough cash for small shops and rural areas. It is advisable to withdraw cash from ATMs that are available in larger cities.
There is no vaccination requirement for entry into Eswatini, however, vaccinations against Hepatitis A, B and Typhus are recommended. A travel insurance is essential to cover unforeseen medical costs or travel problems. Check whether your insurance is valid worldwide to be covered in case of emergency.
In Eswatini drives on the left side, and you need a valid international driving license to rent vehicles. Make sure to respect the traffic rules and be cautious, especially in rural areas. Road conditions can vary, so plan accordingly and drive defensively.
The simplest way to buy a SIM card is from local providers like MTN or Swazi Mobile. These are available in most large cities, often in stores or at the airport. Make sure to present your passport to activate the card. A local rate can help you significantly reduce travel costs.
