Tajikistan Travel and Vacation – Good to know

Travelers need a visa to enter Tajikistan. The visa can be applied for online and is usually available as an e-visa. Make sure you have all the required documents ready. Note that a visa on arrival is sometimes possible but not guaranteed. Therefore, plan ahead and check the current requirements, as these may change.
The Dushanbe Airport (DYU) is the most important airport in the country and the best starting point for your off-road travels. It offers international connections and the possibility to fly to domestic destinations. Be sure to also check flights to smaller airports such as Khujand or Kurgan-Tyube to better reach remote areas. There are transport options from the airport to the city.
The local currency is the Somoni (TJS). Credit cards are accepted in large cities, but cash is still important, especially in rural areas. It is recommended to bring some cash in USD or EUR to exchange it for Somoni on site. Banks and exchange offices are available, but it can be difficult to find ATMs outside of large cities.
It is recommended to check the standard vaccinations before traveling, and possibly consider additional vaccinations against hepatitis A, typhus, and rabies. Travel insurance is highly recommended to be covered in case of medical emergencies or unexpected events. Also, inform yourself about current health risks before you travel.
To drive in Tajikistan, an international driving license is required, which must be shown along with your national driving license. SIM cards can be purchased at many places in cities, especially in shops and airports. Be sure to compare the #prepaid tariff and data packages to find the best deal for your off-road adventures.
