The Journey
An organised namibia private self drive tour gives you the route, vehicle, and all booked accommodation — you set the daily pace. The namibia 4x4 self drive safari departs Windhoek south through the Kalahari to Sesriem. Days 3–4: Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei, and Dune 45. Three nights in Swakopmund. Then north through Twyfelfontein and Damaraland on the namibia 4x4 rental safari section into Etosha for two days, Onguma Reserve for two days, the waterberg plateau safari, and return to Windhoek on Day 18.
Namibia
This private safari namibia circuit covers 19 days self-drive from Windhoek through Namibia's major regions: Kalahari, Namib Desert, Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Twyfelfontein, Damaraland, Etosha, Onguma, and Waterberg Plateau.
You land at Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) and transfer to your Windhoek hotel. Afternoon free for city exploration: the Christuskirche from 1910, the Independence Memorial Museum, and the Namibia Craft Centre are all within walking distance of the centre. Founded in 1890 under German colonial rule, Windhoek is a modern African city of contrasts — the start of this namibia self drive 4x4 safari. Group briefing and vehicle handover this evening.
First driving day south through the Kalahari. The Kalahari covers over 1.2 million km² across Namibia, South Africa, Botswana, Angola, and Zambia — a semi-arid thornbush savanna of red sand with acacia trees, gemsboks, and springbok. Despite the name it receives up to 500 mm of rain annually and supports substantial wildlife. The route passes through open farmland before the red sand and characteristic vegetation of the Kalahari proper appear. Accommodation: camp or lodge.
The route continues southwest toward the Namib Naukluft and the Sesriem area. Long gravel stretches cross open plains before the landscape transitions from Kalahari scrub to red dune country — the first dunes visible from the road are a signal that the Namib has begun. Camp at Sesriem tonight: the 4x4 park gate opens at sunrise tomorrow for the sossusvlei self drive day. Accommodation: desert camp or lodge.
Pre-dawn entry to Namib-Naukluft National Park. Dune 45 at sunrise: the 170 m dune is the most photographed point on any namibia 4x4 self drive safari in southern Africa. After breakfast a 4x4 transfer carries you to Sossusvlei and Dead Vlei — 900-year-old camelthorn trees on white clay between 300 m dunes. Sesriem Canyon in the afternoon. The canyon was named by early settlers who needed six leather straps tied together to lower a bucket to the water. Accommodation: desert camp or lodge.
Drive west out of the desert and across the Tropic of Capricorn toward the Atlantic coast. The coastal road into Swakopmund passes the Walvis Bay lagoon — a RAMSAR wetland that holds up to 100,000 flamingos in summer. Swakopmund combines German colonial architecture, a fishing harbour, and some of southern Africa's best adventure activity options. Three nights here give time to rest and explore. Accommodation: hotel.
Free day in Swakopmund. Options: sandboarding on the dunes east of town (half-day, bookable in town), sea kayaking with Cape fur seals at Walvis Bay, quad biking through the dune belt, a catamaran cruise for dolphins and flamingos, or skydiving over the Namib. The town's German-influenced cafes, crystal gallery, and colonial museum provide quieter alternatives on this namibia private self drive tour rest day. Accommodation: hotel.
Second free day in Swakopmund. Use this time for any activities not covered yesterday, or drive south to Walvis Bay and the salt pans. The swakopmund 4x4 tour dune belt east of town is accessible independently with the rental 4x4 if tyres are deflated at the edge of the sand. Check dune access conditions with the accommodation before attempting. Accommodation: hotel.
North from Swakopmund into Damaraland and the Twyfelfontein area. The Organ Pipes stop on the way: 100 m of basalt columns up to 5 m high formed when lava intruded into shale 120 million years ago. Nearby, the Burnt Mountain is a 200-million-year-old volcanic hill coloured red, purple, and pink by later dolerite intrusions. Then Twyfelfontein UNESCO rock engravings: 2,500 San petroglyphs on sun-bleached dolerite, the largest concentration of rock art in Africa. Guided visit only. Accommodation: camp or lodge.
A second day in the Twyfelfontein region allows for a longer morning at the rock art site or a visit to the petrified forest — prehistoric tree trunks mineralised over 280 million years lying across open desert ground. The route then moves east toward the Damaraland plateau on corrugated D-class gravel tracks. Small Damara villages dot the route; roadside encounters are common. Accommodation: camp or lodge.
The namibia 4x4 rental safari Damaraland stage. This region is the traditional homeland of the Damara people, one of the oldest groups in Namibia. Desert-adapted elephant and black rhino use the communal conservancy land around Huab and Aba-Huab rivers. Conservancy wildlife encounters are possible throughout the day. The Brandberg massif at 2,573 m dominates the southern horizon. Accommodation: camp or lodge.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
Drive north and east toward Etosha National Park. The approach road from Outjo to the Andersson Gate passes through acacia savanna with increasing wildlife density as you near the park boundary. Entry through the Andersson Gate at Okaukuejo in the late afternoon. The Okaukuejo floodlit waterhole runs through the night — lion, elephant, and rhino are regularly seen after dark from the camp perimeter fence. Accommodation: park camp or lodge.
Full day of etosha self drive safari inside the park on your own 4x4. The Etosha pan covers 4,760 km² of salt crust and is visible from space; in wet years it fills with water and attracts tens of thousands of flamingos. Waterhole activity peaks between 10:00 and 14:00. Drive the central pan road between Okaukuejo and Halali for the best variety of habitats: open pan edge, mopane woodland, and limestone outcrops. Accommodation: park camp or lodge.
Exit Etosha via the Lindequist Gate (eastern entrance, 12 km from Namutoni) and enter the Onguma Game Reserve. Onguma is a private 20,000-hectare reserve sharing the eastern park boundary. Fisher's Pan — a satellite pan of Etosha — is visible from several points inside the reserve. The reserve holds 30+ mammal species: kudu, giraffe, eland, gemsbok, zebra, impala, lion, cheetah, leopard, and a family of black rhino. Guided game drives available from the lodge. Accommodation: Onguma lodge.
Second day at Onguma. Guided morning game drive through the reserve, then a guided afternoon drive from the eastern Etosha boundary. In summer (January through March) Onguma becomes a birding destination with 300+ species. The private safari namibia pace is fully yours today — no group schedule. Rest, swim, or join a third game drive at sunset. Accommodation: Onguma lodge.
Drive south from Onguma toward the Waterberg Plateau. The plateau is a sandstone mesa rising 200 m above the surrounding bush — the route approaches through acacia savanna as the red sandstone cliffs grow on the horizon. Waterberg was the site of the decisive 1904 battle between the Herero people and the German colonial army; a memorial inside the park commemorates the victims. Check in at the park lodge in the late afternoon. Accommodation: Waterberg lodge.
Guided morning game drive on the waterberg plateau safari circuit. The plateau holds species not found on the open Namibian plains: sable antelope, roan antelope, white rhino, and tsessebe. Over 200 bird species have been recorded here including the rare Rüppell's parrot. The plateau itself is only accessible on guided drives — the lodge organises these daily. Afternoon free for swimming or the plateau walking trail. Accommodation: Waterberg lodge.
Second day at Waterberg. Another guided morning game drive and the option of a longer afternoon walk with a ranger. The Waterberg Wilderness section of the park offers a more remote experience on foot. The red sandstone cliffs are particularly photogenic in afternoon light. This is the final wildlife day of the namibia self drive 4x4 circuit before the Windhoek return. Accommodation: Waterberg lodge.
Return drive to Windhoek via Otjiwarongo on the B1 highway. The drive takes approximately 4–5 hours. Arrive in Windhoek mid-afternoon for a last meal, shopping, or a quiet evening. Vehicle handover tomorrow morning. Windhoek has excellent restaurants, craft markets, and the Joe's Beerhouse institution for a final group dinner on this namibia 4x4 self drive safari. Accommodation: Windhoek hotel.
Vehicle handover at the rental partner in Windhoek, then airport transfer to Hosea Kutako International (WDH). The namibia private self drive tour covered 19 days and all major regions of Namibia. Free time in the city before departure if needed. Transfers can be timed to match departure flights — confirm with Overcross at the time of booking.
