MOTORCYCLE-TOURS · MOROCCO
This is a 15-day guided Morocco motorcycle enduro tour starting and finishing in Marrakesh, covering roughly 1,430 miles (2,300 km) through the High Atlas, Sahara dunes, and deep south.
The Journey
Morocco is one of those places where the landscape changes faster than you expect. In a single day you can drop from snow-capped Atlas passes into palmeries that edge the desert, and by evening find yourself in terrain that feels genuinely remote.
The south doesn’t ease you in — Erg Chegaga, Lac Iriki, and the tracks through Jbel Saghro are the kind of riding that stays with you. What makes this country work for motorcycle travel is the contrast: mountain, desert floor, gorge, and kasbah — all within one route, all within 15 days.
Morocco
Morocco puts 15 days of riding variety into one country. The High Atlas climbs past 9,800 feet before dropping into the pre-Sahara. South of Zagora the paved roads end and real desert begins — sand, rock, and dry wadi crossings that reward riders who came prepared.
You land at Marrakesh-Menara Airport and transfer to camp. The group meets, guides introduce the itinerary, and equipment gets organized. The support vehicle is loaded and the first briefing walks through the stages ahead. Day one is about settling in — adjusting to the heat, the pace of Morocco, and the logistics before the riding starts tomorrow.
After breakfast the tour heads south, climbing into the High Atlas on winding mountain roads that reach above 6,600 feet. Cedar forests, small Berber villages, and long switchback descents mark the day. Camp for the night is in Taliouine, Morocco’s saffron capital, with the evening sun fading over the Atlas ridgeline.
The off-road section begins here. Wide gravel tracks and dry riverbeds carry you toward Foum Zguid, the gateway to the Sahara. The route adapts to group pace — no fixed line, just the direction south. Palm groves appear between the rock, and by evening the camp sits on the edge of the desert where the silence is total.
A full day south of Foum Zguid into terrain that served as a location for Spectre. The riding alternates between compacted sand, loose stone, and dry wadi crossings. A flat-topped mesa marks the turnaround point. Back at camp, the day’s riding settles in around the fire.
An early start southeast through Iriki National Park, crossing the flat salt crust of Lac Iriki before the terrain softens into sand. By afternoon, the dune ridges of Erg Chegaga come into view — one of the largest dune systems in Morocco. Camp is set on the dune edge. The Sahara sunset and the density of the star field here are not something most riders have seen before.
Morning brings a ten-kilometer dune crossing that pushes rider skill to the limit — sand technique counts here. The town of Mhamid provides a rest stop, then the route transitions to paved road through the Drâa Valley to Zagora, surrounded by palm groves, kasbahs, and old caravan tracks. Desert, valley, and culture in a single stage.
Two days of riding from Zagora into the deep outback, combining short paved sections with long off-road stretches: loose gravel, rock, and flat open plains. One night in the wilderness with no roads nearby. On the second afternoon, the dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon — up to 980 feet (300 m) high, the most recognizable landmark in the Moroccan Sahara.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
The camp stays put. Riders who want more can run the circuit around Jbel Bega, a technical loop along the Algerian border. Others walk the dunes, drink tea with Berber families from the nearby camp, or simply rest. Both options work. The view of Erg Chebbi doesn’t change either way.
Leaving the sand behind, the route runs northwest via Alnif on a mix of paved road and off-road connector tracks toward Tinghir. The landscape shifts from desert floor to eroded rock formations as the Atlas foothills come back into range. Tinghir sits in a palm oasis with the mountains visible to the north.
One of the defining stages of the tour. The road winds through Todra Gorge — vertical rock walls several hundred meters high on both sides — before the route climbs toward Boumalne Dadès. Depending on conditions and group pace, the line runs either over the 9,810-foot (2,990 m) Aghoudal Pass or through a gravel track cutting into the Dadès Gorge. Asphalt, debris, and long mountain views mark the day.
The direct road to N’Kob is now paved, so the day runs as a long loop through the Jbel Saghro instead — rock formations, wide gravel plains, and small Berber villages with no other tourists. By evening, a nomad camp near N’Kob. The fire, the wind in the palms, and the silence mark the last night in the deep south.
A new off-road line north to Ouarzazate, passing through valleys that served as locations for Gladiator and Kingdom of Heaven. Gravel, paved stretches, and open canyon views lead into the city by afternoon. The film studios are worth a stop if the group wants. Camp holds the last desert atmosphere before the final push back over the Atlas.
The last full day visits Aït-Ben-Haddou — a UNESCO World Heritage ksar of clay buildings and narrow alleys — before the route climbs back over the High Atlas to Marrakesh. The descent into the city on the final kilometers of a 15-day tour lands somewhere between satisfaction and reluctance. Camp, a shared dinner, and the end of the expedition.
Motorcycles are loaded onto the transport, gear is packed, and the group disperses from Marrakesh. The bikes return to Tübingen over the following 10–20 days. Carnet ATA documents need to be cleared on departure.
