South Africa & Namibia

The south africa safari tour opens in Cape Town before crossing into Namibia for dunes, canyons and a full namibia safari tour through Etosha.

Days 1–12

Cape Town – Cedarberg Region

This south africa safari tour begins in Cape Town. Leaving the city, we make a final stop to look back at Table Mountain across Table Bay before calling in at a traditional farm stall ('padstal') for local baked goods. The Cedarberg region offers spectacular mountain scenery, orange farms and the home of the Rooibos bush — whose herbal tea has earned a global following. Dinner at our overnight stop gives everyone a chance to meet and enjoy South African hospitality.

Namaqualand – Orange River

Namaqualand delivers our first taste of the desert landscapes that define this southern africa overland tour. We drive north, stopping in Springbok for supplies, then continue to our riverside camp on the Orange (Gariep) River. Spring travellers (July–September) may encounter the famous wildflower bloom. Whatever the season, the stark desert scenery creates an arresting backdrop for the journey.

Orange River – Namibia Border

The Orange River — longest in South Africa, named Gariep in KhoeKhoe — rises in Lesotho's mountains before carving a sharp line through desert. This morning we join an optional canoe trip on the river. After lunch we cross into Namibia and drive inland to our overnight stop at Ais Ais, where the mineral-rich hot springs are available for a soak.

Fish River Canyon – Keetmanshoop

The fish river canyon namibia is the largest canyon in Africa — a colossal gorge carved over millions of years. We walk the rim at a gentle pace, taking in the vast scale of the drop below. Continuing west to Keetmanshoop, we spend the afternoon exploring the Quiver Tree Forest and the Giants Playground, where towering dolerite boulders are stacked as if placed by hand.

Namib-Naukluft National Park

One of the longer drives on this africa overland tours route takes us deeper into the Namib Desert. Grasslands in the east gradually give way to red dune fields as we push west through rural Namibia. Tonight we camp at the edge of the dune fields, falling asleep to the call of the shy barking gecko under a sky thick with stars.

Sossusvlei – Namib-Naukluft Park

We enter Namib-Naukluft National Park at sunrise and drive to the iconic Dune 45 for a climb that reveals the shifting colours of the desert at first light. After breakfast, a 4x4 transfer takes us to Sossusvlei and the cracked white clay of Deadvlei. The day ends at the compact Sesriem Canyon before we return to camp under the desert stars.

Sossusvlei – Swakopmund

The last desert day includes an optional guided excursion with a local expert exploring the Namib's ecology. We pause at the Tropic of Capricorn marker before driving west to the Atlantic, arriving in the colonial coastal town of Swakopmund. Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant — a welcome return to civilization after the dunes.

Swakopmund – Free Day

Swakopmund is the base for this full free day on our namibia safari tour. The German-colonial architecture, beachside cafes and bakeries are worth exploring at your own pace. Optional adrenaline activities are available — sandboarding, quad biking, and skydiving are the most popular — or simply walk the beachfront and browse the town.

Swakopmund – Khorixas

The route heads north along the Skeleton Coast, where hot desert sand meets cold Atlantic surf. We stop at Wlotzkasbaken for photographs and visit the lichen fields to learn about these slow-growing coastal organisms. Cape Cross seal reserve — home to over 200,000 Cape fur seals — is a highlight (subject to access at the time of visit). We then head inland to Khorixas, visiting the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein and the Petrified Forest with a local guide.

Khorixas – Etosha National Park

The etosha national park safari begins this afternoon as we enter one of Africa's great game parks. At 18,000 square kilometres, Etosha is Namibia's largest park, its name meaning 'great white area' — a reference to the enormous salt pan at its centre. We spend the afternoon driving the park in the overland truck, with wildlife visible at every waterhole.

Etosha National Park

A full second day on the etosha national park safari lets us cover more of the pan's edge and the surrounding savanna. Elephant, lion, black rhino, giraffe and zebra are regularly seen here. No two game drives are the same, and the anticipation of each encounter is what keeps everyone scanning the tree line.

Etosha National Park

A free morning at camp to rest and catch up before an afternoon game drive as we depart Etosha. Three days in the park give this namibia safari tour a depth that shorter itineraries cannot match — with each drive adding species to the list. We head to our next overnight camp after the afternoon game drive.

Botswana

The okavango delta safari and chobe national park safari are the twin highlights of the Botswana segment, offering mokoro rides, game walks and a river boat encounter with elephant herds.

Days 13–18

Etosha – Divundu

We leave Etosha National Park and drive east to the Kavango River, crossing into the lush Caprivi Strip. Our overnight stop is in Divundu, where the change from dry savanna to riverine woodland is immediate and striking. A quiet evening by the river follows the long drive.

Divundu – Maun, Botswana

A morning boat ride on the Kavango River is a gentle start before we cross into Botswana and drive south to Maun, the gateway town for the okavango delta safari. We overnight in Maun and prepare for the delta experience, packing light bags for the next two nights away from the main truck.

Maun – Khwai Conservation Area

Early risers can join an optional scenic flight over the Okavango Delta before breakfast. Smaller 4x4 vehicles then transfer us from Maun into the Khwai Conservation Area, where our guide prepares us for an afternoon okavango delta safari by traditional mokoro — the flat-bottomed dugout canoe poled silently through papyrus channels. (Mokoro timing may vary by season.)

Moremi Game Reserve

A full day in Moremi Game Reserve on 4x4 vehicles explores one of Botswana's finest wilderness areas. The reserve's habitats range from floodplains and reed beds to mopane woodland and open savanna — supporting a wide range of mammal and bird species. This is among the best botswana safari packages landscapes for wildlife density. We return to Khwai in the evening to compare the day's sightings.

Khwai – Nata

An early open 4x4 safari drive starts the morning before we rejoin the main truck in Maun. The drive east to Nata cuts across the Botswana salt pans, with views that shift from delta-edge wetlands to open Kalahari landscape. Wildlife is possible along this stretch — keep eyes open for gemsbok and giraffe on the plains.

Nata – Kasane, Chobe National Park

A guided morning visit to the Nata Bird Sanctuary may reveal pelicans and flamingos in the thousands, depending on seasonal water levels. We then drive north to Kasane, arriving in time for lunch. The afternoon is spent on a river boat safari along the Chobe River — the classic chobe national park safari by water, with elephant herds swimming and drinking at the banks in large numbers.

Zimbabwe & Botswana

The victoria falls tour segment crosses into Zimbabwe for two full days at one of the world's great natural landmarks before returning through Botswana towards South Africa.

Days 19–22

Kasane – Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe

We cross the border into Zimbabwe for the short drive to Victoria Falls. Today is dedicated to the falls themselves — known locally as 'Mosi-oa-Tunya' (the smoke that thunders). The victoria falls tour path through the rainforest delivers close views of the Zambezi plunging into Batoka Gorge. The adventure town also offers optional activities for those who want afternoon excitement — craft markets and cafes for those who prefer a quieter pace.

Victoria Falls – Free Day

A second full day on this victoria falls tour segment is open for the activity of your choice. White-water rafting on the Zambezi, a helicopter flight over the falls, bungee jumping from the bridge, or a relaxed morning walk along the gorge — the schedule is yours to set. Cape town to victoria falls tour travellers completing the loop have extra reason to mark this day.

Victoria Falls – Francistown

We leave Victoria Falls and re-enter Botswana, driving south through open bush to Francistown, the country's second-largest city. The drive is long but the flat savanna landscape is peaceful. We arrive at our overnight accommodation on the outskirts of town in the late afternoon.

Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.

Francistown – Johannesburg, South Africa

An early start takes us south across the border into South Africa and on to Johannesburg. The city marks the re-entry into the south africa safari tour zone as we prepare for the Kruger segment. We arrive in the late afternoon and settle in for an early night before the Mpumalanga days ahead.

South Africa – Kruger & Eastern Highlands

The kruger park safari south africa segment covers two full days on open 4x4 vehicles, followed by the panorama route south africa and the mountain kingdoms of Eswatini and Lesotho.

Days 23–33

Johannesburg – Greater Kruger

We head east from Johannesburg through Mpumalanga's coal fields, following old trading routes to the Lowveld. This kruger national park safari tour begins with a sundowner game drive through the reserve as we arrive — a strong first impression of the wildlife density in one of Africa's most famous parks.

Kruger National Park – Full Day Safari

A full day inside Kruger National Park on an open 4x4 vehicle is the highlight of the kruger park safari south africa experience. The park holds 147 mammal species, 507 bird species and 336 tree species — and is the most reliable place in the country to find all Big Five: lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo. Early morning and late afternoon are the most active periods for large predators.

Panorama Route South Africa

Today follows the panorama route south africa along the escarpment edge that separates the highveld plateau from the Kruger bushveld below. Stops include Bourke's Luck Potholes, the Three Rondavels viewpoint and God's Window, where on clear days the view extends 300 metres down to the Lowveld. An optional morning walk is available for those who want the early light in the mountains.

Kruger – Eswatini (Swaziland)

We drive south through Kruger — still watching for game from the truck — and exit at the park's southern gate before crossing into Eswatini (formerly Swaziland). The afternoon road winds through forested mountains and green valleys of this landlocked kingdom, very different in character from the dry bush we've left behind. Tonight we stay in the Ezulwini Valley south of the capital Mbabane.

Eswatini – Mlilwane Wildlife Reserve

Mlilwane Wildlife Reserve covers 4,560 hectares and is one of the few reserves in southern Africa where guided walks are possible without the risk of encountering dangerous big game. Our guide leads a morning nature trail through the reserve, sharing historical and ecological context about Eswatini's conservation story.

Eswatini – St. Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal

We cross back into South Africa and drive south into KwaZulu-Natal — historically the kingdom of the Zulu people and the realm of King Shaka. Our destination is the coastal town of St. Lucia, on the edge of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, where hippos and crocodiles share the estuary with fishing boats.

Hluhluwe-Imfolozi & St. Lucia River

An early safari in Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Game Reserve — one of the last strongholds of the white and black rhinoceros — gives us a morning in one of Africa's oldest protected areas. After returning for lunch, an afternoon boat ride on the St. Lucia River brings us face-to-face with the estuary's thriving hippo population.

KwaZulu-Natal Coast – Drakensberg

The route climbs inland toward the Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site whose Zulu name means 'Barrier of Spears.' Along the way we stop at Howick Falls and a memorial site near the location where Nelson Mandela was captured in 1962. Tonight and tomorrow night are spent in the mountain foothills.

Ukhahlamba Drakensberg Park

A hiking day in the Drakensberg with trail options suited to different fitness levels. The mountains host ancient San rock art, grassland birds and clear mountain streams. This botswana safari tour-length itinerary means days like this — with open time to explore a wild place on foot — are genuinely rare on African group tours.

Drakensberg – Lesotho

The route crosses the Golden Gate National Park cliffs in South Africa's Free State before ascending into the mountain kingdom of Lesotho — the only country in the world entirely above 1,000 metres. We pass through the capital Maseru and continue climbing to reach our high-altitude base camp between the peaks.

Lesotho – Mountain Exploration

Lesotho offers a landscape unlike anything else on this route — alpine moorland, basalt rock formations and Sotho villages reached by horse trails and dirt tracks. We spend a few hours on foot exploring the terrain around camp, one of the more remote overnight stops on this southern africa overland tour.

South Africa – Karoo & Garden Route

The final South Africa stage connects the Karoo, Addo Elephant Park, the Garden Route coast and Cape Agulhas on a coastal return to Cape Town.

Days 34–41

Lesotho – Graaff-Reinet, Karoo

We descend from Lesotho back into South Africa and cross the semi-arid Great Karoo. The flat, rocky landscape — scattered with succulents and old farmhouses — provides a sharp contrast to the mountains behind us. Tonight's stop is in Graaff-Reinet, the fourth-oldest town in South Africa, founded in 1786.

Karoo – Addo Elephant Park – Gqeberha

An optional sunrise excursion to the Valley of Desolation starts the morning with a panorama of dolerite columns above Graaff-Reinet. We then drive south to Addo Elephant National Park for a half-day game drive in the overland truck — the park is home to the densest elephant population in Africa. Our overnight stop is in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), on the Indian Ocean coast.

Greater Addo Elephant Park

A second morning in Addo Elephant National Park allows more time with the resident elephant herds as well as lion, buffalo and black rhino. Since its expansion, Addo has grown to become one of South Africa's three largest national parks, its dense thicket vegetation supporting species not easily seen in open savanna parks.

Gqeberha – Tsitsikamma National Park

A brief early stop at Jeffreys Bay — Africa's most famous surf break — includes a visit to the small surf museum. We then drive west into the Tsitsikamma region, where indigenous forest meets the Indian Ocean cliffs. This is the start of the Garden Route proper, and the scenery changes dramatically from Karoo plateau to green coastal forest.

Tsitsikamma National Park – Otter Trail Coast

Tsitsikamma National Park is one of South Africa's largest marine protected areas. This morning we hike the first section of the Otter Trail along the Waterfall Trail, a rugged coastal path through ancient yellowwood forest. Those who prefer can take the boardwalk route to Storms River Mouth. An optional Woodcutters Journey is available in the afternoon, exploring the area's forest heritage.

Tsitsikamma – Oudtshoorn, Klein Karoo

After a stop in the harbour town of Knysna, we cross the Outeniqua Mountains and drop into the Klein Karoo basin. Oudtshoorn, the ostrich capital of the world, is our destination. We visit the Cango Caves for a guided tour of stalactite and stalagmite chambers formed over millions of years in the limestone beneath the Swartberg.

Route 62 – Barrydale

Before leaving the Klein Karoo, we make a morning stop to watch meerkats as they emerge to catch the early sun — one of the more lighthearted encounters on this africa overland tours route. We then follow part of the Route 62, calling in at farm stalls and roadside markets. The day includes a stop at the legendary Ronnie's Sex Shop — not what the name suggests, but a famous countryside pub.

Whale Coast – Cape Agulhas – Cape Town

The final day of this south africa safari tour takes us to the southernmost point of the African continent — Cape Agulhas, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans officially meet. We drive north along the Whale Coast, stopping in Hermanus (July–November is prime whale-watching season for Southern Right Whales) and at Stony Point, the largest African penguin colony on the mainland. The tour ends with arrival in Cape Town city centre.
