The Journey
Chile – wedged between the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, with a maximum width of 400 km, is a single, thread-like, 4,300-kilometer-long coastline. For many, Chile remains a blank spot on the map. Behind this undiscovered landscape lie incredibly rich and pristine natural beauties, which, along with its friendly people, make this country an extremely rewarding travel destination. It combines the driest desert in the world, lush forests, and a fantastic landscape of glaciers and fjords. European influence is clearly evident in the cities as well as in the people, with their sophistication, cosmopolitanism, and courtesy. Thus, Chile is considered one of the most highly developed countries in South America, where ‘everything works’.
You will be met at Santiago de Chile airport by your local, German-speaking tour guide and transferred to your hotel. Santiago de Chile is a city of contrasts. This metropolis of nearly six million inhabitants boasts colonial-style buildings alongside modern skyscrapers and trendy cafés, all set against the backdrop of the ever-present Andes Mountains on the city's outskirts. Your tour begins with a drive to the city center and the Alameda, the main thoroughfare located in the heart of the city. Along this main street, you can see important historical buildings such as the La Moneda Palace, the University of Chile, the Church of San Francisco, the National Library, and Santa Lucia Hill, where Santiago was founded in 1541. In the city center, you will also visit the main square with its cathedral and the old post office. Your tour of Santiago continues to the Mercado Central, the main market for fish and seafood. Following the Alameda, you will cross the Mapocho River. Passing through the vibrant Bellavista district, known for its artists and nightlife, you will arrive at the Cerro San Cristóbal viewpoint. From here, you'll enjoy a fantastic view over Santiago's seemingly endless sea of houses and the impressive backdrop of the nearby Andes Mountains. A visit to the modern residential areas of Vitacura and Las Condes, as well as the Providencia business and shopping district, will complete your visit to the capital. Overnight stay at the 3-star Hotel Providencia or similar (standard room). Meals: not included. Half-day city tour (4 hours).
Transfer to the airport for your flight to Calama in northern Chile. Upon arrival at Calama Airport, you will be met by your local guide and transferred to your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama (1 hour 30 minutes). San Pedro de Atacama lies 2,438 meters above sea level in a green oasis in the heart of the Atacama Desert. This small town is located on the ancient Inca road that connected Cusco with central Chile during the Inca occupation. Here you will also find the Pater Le Paige Museum, named after its founder. Over 4,000 skulls, weapons, and stone pottery fascinate visitors. A very special highlight awaits you this evening: You will admire the sunset in the Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley). From the valley's highest dune, you will have a fantastic view across bizarrely shaped desert rocks to the backdrop of snow-capped volcanoes on the horizon, the most impressive of which is the perfectly formed cone of Licancabur. Overnight stay at the Hotel Diego de Almagro San Pedro de Atacama 3* or similar (superior room). Included meals: breakfast. Transfer from the hotel to Santiago Airport. Flight Santiago - Calama (not included). Transfer to San Pedro de Atacama. Excursion to the “Valle de la Luna” (Moon Valley).
South of San Pedro, against the stunning backdrop of snow-capped volcanic peaks, lies the Salar de Atacama, a salt flat covering approximately 3,000 km². This seemingly inhospitable environment is a pristine refuge for flamingos. You'll observe these beautiful birds foraging for food before traveling to nearby Toconao. This small village, with only about 546 inhabitants, boasts a beautiful 18th-century colonial church with a freestanding bell tower. Toconao is characterized by the white volcanic rock known as Liparita, which is used in its construction. Locals use it to build their houses and to create beautiful little figurines, which are sold in the main square. Overnight stay at the Hotel Diego de Almagro San Pedro de Atacama 3* or similar (superior room). Meal: Breakfast. Half-day excursion to the Salar de Atacama and Toconao (4 hours).
The day is yours to enjoy at your leisure. You can optionally book the following excursion through our local partner office: a full-day trip to the Tatio Geysers. Early in the morning, around 4:00 AM, you'll depart for the more than 100 geysers of El Tatio, near the Bolivian border. El Tatio is a geothermal field at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters. Here, you can witness the spectacular eruption of steam jets every morning, starting precisely at sunrise. Boiling hot spray shoots from the frozen earth high into the clear Andean air, offering a breathtaking spectacle. Optionally, you can book an Andean stargazing excursion in the evening. You will have the opportunity to meet a local guide who will tell you more about Andean stargazing (traditions and techniques for harnessing cosmic energy). Please note: This excursion is shared with international travelers and an English-speaking guide. Stargazing is weather dependent and subject to the lunar phases (no stargazing is possible three days before and after the full moon). In case of bad weather or cloudy skies, the excursion will not take place. Overnight stay at the Hotel Diego de Almagro San Pedro de Atacama 3* or similar (superior room). Meal: Breakfast.
Transfer to Calama Airport with other travelers (group transfer), accompanied by a German-speaking tour guide, for your flight back to Santiago. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be met and transferred to the hotel. The hotel is located approximately 40 km from Santiago in the Maipo Valley, one of the world's finest wine-growing regions. The winery was founded in 1880 by Domingo Fernandez Concha, who built the houses and chapel on the estate. The old family home is now surrounded by a beautiful park and gardens spanning almost 100 acres. The estate boasts an impressive 800 hectares of vineyards. Modern bottling equipment and ample storage capacity contribute to the production of top-quality wines. Santa Rita has received numerous international awards for the quality of its wines. After a tour of the winery, you will be invited to a wine tasting. Afterward, you can visit the Andino Alto Jahuel Museum. The Andean Museum houses a private collection of valuable pre-Columbian artifacts from various Chilean Andean cultures. The museum's mission is to enrich the heritage of Chilean culture, which has preserved many important values. The museum and its cultural treasures are just 50 minutes from Santiago. The building is located next to the colonial-era Santa Rita Winery and is constructed in a modern style, clearly distinguishing it from the original structure. A gray facade, reminiscent of Inca architecture, blends seamlessly into the Jahuel area. Notes: The tour and wine tasting are conducted with international travelers and a Spanish- and English-speaking guide, while transfers are private with a German-speaking guide. The winery, restaurant, and museum are closed on Mondays. Overnight stay at the 3-star Hotel Providencia or similar (standard room). Included meals: Breakfast. Before heading to Puerto Varas, an introductory city tour of Puerto Montt is on the agenda. This port city was founded in 1850 on the Bay of Reloncaví, primarily by German immigrants. The strong German influence on the region is still evident in the architecture. Puerto Montt's economy is mainly based on its important port, salmon farming, and forestry. First, you will visit Puerto Montt's main square, the Plaza de Armas. The cathedral here is considered the oldest building in the entire region. Following the market visit, you will be transferred to your hotel in Puerto Varas. The town is situated on Lake Llanquihue and offers exceptional views of the impressive, snow-capped Osorno volcano. Here, an awe-inspiring natural spectacle awaits you – the shimmering blue, roaring water cascading down the rocks with incredible force and speed (approximately 30-minute stop). Afterward, you'll continue to Petrohué, the western port of the spectacular Lake Todos los Santos (All Saints Lake). Here, you'll board a catamaran that will take you across Lake Todos los Santos to Peulla in just under two hours. The emerald-green lake is considered by many visitors to be the most beautiful lake in Chile.
