Western Sahara Travel and Vacation – Good to know

For entry into the Western Sahara, you need a visa that is not available on-site. Apply for it in advance at a Moroccan embassy or consulate. Please note that it is important to submit all required documents, as the process can take several weeks. Check the specific requirements that apply to your country of origin.
The best airport for arrival is the Laayoune Airport, which is regularly served by Moroccan cities. Alternatively, you can travel to Western Sahara via Agadir or Casablanca. Allow additional time for the road trip, as transportation options between cities can vary.
The local currency in the Western Sahara is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). Credit cards are accepted in large cities, but it is advisable to carry enough cash for rural areas. ATMs are sometimes unreliable, so plan accordingly. Exchange money in Morocco to avoid problems.
Vaccinations are not legally required in the Western Sahara, but standard vaccinations (such as tetanus and hepatitis A) are recommended. A travel insurance is also advisable, as it covers medical costs and unforeseen events. Check your insurance to ensure that off-road travel is covered.
To drive in the Western Sahara, you need a valid international driver's license along with your national driver's license. Be sure to carry all necessary documents as checks at entrances and on the roads are common. Off-road driving requires some experience, so you should exercise caution.
SIM cards are easily available in large cities like Laayoune. Local providers like Maroc Telecom offer various rates and packages. You can buy SIM cards in stores or even at the airport. Don't forget to have your passport with you, as it is often required for registration.
