OVERVIEW
4x4 Comfort - Offroad trip through the Carpathians - Romania
Experience an unforgettable off-road adventure in the Romanian Carpathians!
Discover enchanting landscapes, pristine primeval forests, and untouched nature away from paved paths. During the day, you will encounter hidden cart paths, deep forests, and impressive mountain massifs. And in the evenings, you can enjoy the comfort of cozy, locally typical guesthouses.
Our route takes you through regions like Polovragi, Horezu, and the spectacular gorges of the "Cheile Sohodolului". This 4x4 tour is aimed at both experienced off-roaders and families with big and small adventurers who want to use their off-road vehicles properly.
No other country in Western and Central Europe has such a large, contiguous forest area as Romania. The Carpathian forests, with their crystal-clear mineral springs, are not only home to more than a third of all European wolves, bears, and lynxes - they also rank among the last truly primeval forests on our continent.
Join us on this unique journey through Romania's untamed nature:
Follow remote off-road tracks, cross streams lined with rocks, and pass by isolated alpine huts that seem to have been forgotten by time. This comfort tour will become an unforgettable beautiful adventure for every nature and 4x4 lover - especially for those who prefer to sleep in a real bed rather than in a tent.
Introduction to the Comfort Journey through the Carpathians
Our Romania off-road trip begins with arrival at a very special and comfortable place: a small, rustic guesthouse near Sibiu/Sibiel, nestled in the gentle hills of Transylvania. Here, you immediately feel the warmth of Romania: familial, warm, and inviting. In the evening, we gather for a joint dinner where we are spoiled with traditional Romanian cuisine: hearty specialties like Sarmale, Mămăligă with Brânză (cheese), and of course a glass of homemade Țuică for toasting. In a cozy setting, we get to know each other, exchange our first stories, and feel that a real off-road adventure awaits us.
Daily program: Comfort tour on 4 wheels through the Carpathians
Day 1: Arrival & Welcome to Transylvania - Romania
Our Romania off-road trip begins with the arrival at a very special and comfortable place: a small, quaint guesthouse near Sibiu/Sibiel, nestled in the gentle hills of Transylvania. Here, you can immediately feel the warmth of Romania: familial, warm, and inviting. In the evening, we meet for a joint dinner, where we are treated to traditional Romanian cuisine: hearty specialties such as Sarmale, Mămăligă with Brânză (cheese), and of course, a glass of homemade Țuică for toasting. In a cozy setting, we get to know each other, exchange first stories, and feel that a real off-road adventure awaits us.
Day 2: From the city to the Wilnis
After a cozy start to the day, we begin our adventure around 10:00 a.m. - as we will on the coming days. But before we really get going, we make a quick stop at a traditional Romanian weekly market. Among handmade goods, fresh vegetables, cheese from the Carpathians, and warm encounters with the locals, we buy our last supplies for the journey - a travel day couldn’t start more authentically :-). Then we’re finally off: On lonely paths, accompanied by the rush of a crystal-clear stream, we immerse ourselves in the wild nature of the Cindrel Mountains. The scenery becomes more spectacular with every kilometer. Away from the usual routes, we experience our first real off-road adventures: narrow forest paths, rocky ascents, magnificent views - and the feeling of being completely free.
Day 3: Through lonely pistes in the Cindrel Mountains
Today we dedicate ourselves entirely to the Cindrel Mountains - one of the most original and at the same time most fascinating areas of Transylvania in the Carpathians. On lonely paths and remote trails, we explore the hidden corners of this wild mountain landscape. Along the way, we repeatedly encounter shepherds with their flocks of sheep, who still live and work here as they did centuries ago. The quiet, unhurried atmosphere and the ringing of the bells create an almost meditative sound carpet - pure authentic Romania. Time and again, enchanting panoramic views open up to us, inviting us to pause, marvel, and of course photograph. Wide valleys, gentle hills, dense forests - and above it all, only the vast sky. A day to breathe, enjoy, and immerse ourselves in another world.
Day 4: From the Cindrel Mountains to the Western Carpathians
Today we say goodbye to the Cindrel Mountains, because a new, equally impressive section of our journey awaits us. After a short asphalt stage, we change regions and dive into the Western Carpathians, also known as the Muntii Apuseni. The mountain range has an almost circular outline with a diameter of about 130 to 150 km. It is bounded by the rivers Mureș (Hungarian Maros), Someș, and Barcău and reaches peak heights between 1,100 and 1,800 m. The landscape changes noticeably: the Transylvanian Erzgebirge welcomes us with open heights, rugged rock formations, and wide views. We stop repeatedly to enjoy the vistas - photographic motifs are available here at a minute's notice. A real highlight of the day is the route at Gemsenstein - narrow, adventurous paths embedded in dramatic settings. With a bit of luck, we even spot the namesake of this place: wild chamois, skillfully moving over the steep rocks.
Day 5: Through the Land of the Moți - Motzenland
Today our adventure takes us deep into the land of the Moți (Motzenland) - that is what the proud, tradition-conscious inhabitants of this remote region of the Western Carpathians have called themselves for centuries. The area seems wild, primal, and mysterious. We embark on a short hike through a spectacular canyon, whose narrow rock walls are traversed by a cool, crystal-clear creek. The scenery is impressive and feels almost like another world, where the soul finds peace and the spirit of adventure is awakened at the same time. A special cultural highlight awaits us shortly after: a visit to a 13th-century monastery nestled in the mountains. The ancient walls, the silence, and the history that can be felt here leave a lasting impression. Our overnight spot is in a dreamlike location, at the foot of the "Sleeping Giant," a prominent mountain massif that brings the legends of this region to life. Here our day ends.
Day 6: Mountain Trails & Farewell with a View - Romania in the Heart
As a crowning conclusion to our comfort journey, we are once again greeted by the beautiful side of the Western Carpathians: Today we will traverse dreamy high trails, passing by green mountain meadows, rugged rocks, and expansive valleys. The landscape seems almost surreal - one last time we get to fully enjoy this incredible natural backdrop. We follow panoramic routes with magnificent views that repeatedly invite us to stop, marvel, and catch our breath. In between, charming off-road passages provide driving fun and a sense of adventure. With each kilometer, it becomes clearer: We have experienced Romania up close - with all its facets. The hospitality of the people, the depth of the culture, and the magical landscape have left their marks. It was more than just a journey - it was a true experience for the heart, soul, and adventurous spirit.
