Daily program: Cambodia Offroad Jeep Adventure: Temples, Dolphins & the Mighty Mekong
DAY 1: Siem Reap - Kampong Thom
You start early with a jeep ride from the lodge that takes you directly to the magnificent temple of Angkor Wat, where you will experience the sunrise over the ruins. After that, enjoy a magical walk through the temple in the soft morning light and cool temperatures. After a short van ride, a delicious breakfast awaits you to recharge your energy. After breakfast, you will ride on the hidden paths of the Angkor complex through the jungle and visit some of the best-kept secrets of the park as well as the iconic temples Bayon, Ta Prohm, and the Elephant Terrace. As the temperature rises, you will have lunch overlooking Sra Srang Lake before returning to your hotel.
DAY 2: Kampong Thom - Chloung: The Mighty Mekong River
After a delicious breakfast, we drive our jeeps through the beautiful Cambodian landscape to our first stop of the day. We will stop to see some truly impressive carvings. From huge stone blocks that are sometimes up to 8 meters high, the stone carver chisels and sculpts some extremely impressive sculptures. You will have plenty of time to admire his work. We continue our scenic drive to our second stop and visit a local rubber plantation. Here you will learn more about how the local rubber industry operates, how latex is collected, processed, and dried before being transported to an external rubber factory. After this excursion, we take a ferry north of Stung Trong and cross the mighty Mekong River. It is the twelfth longest river in the world and flows from the heights of the Tibetan plateau to the South China Sea, about 4,500 km from its source. It is the lifeblood of many people, and its impressive size and power can only be experienced firsthand. On the east side of the Mekong lies the old French colonial town of Chloung. In this peaceful and traditional town, we will spend the night in the former governor's building from 1916, allowing us to experience Cambodia's colonial past up close.
DAY 3: Chloung - Kratie - Chloung: Dolphin Watching
We drive our jeeps along the banks of the Mekong and pass by some Muslim Cham villages. These were formed when the Cham fled from the Vietnamese conquest and stayed in their new home, adding a new dimension to the area. In Kampi, 12 km north of Kratie, we board a boat to try to see the Irrawaddy dolphins. These rare, endangered freshwater dolphins live in a beautiful section of the Mekong near a small rapid. The chance of seeing them play in the rapids is very high, so keep your camera ready. After Kampi, we return to Kratie, where we take a ferry to Koh Trong Island. With a local guide, you will explore this island paradise by bicycle and receive explanations about the lifestyle of the inhabitants and the products grown there. Back on the mainland, we drive our jeeps back to Chloung.
DAY 4: Chloung - Phnom Penh: On the Way to the Capital:
After breakfast, you leave Chloung and follow the mighty Mekong towards the city of Kampong Cham. During the dry season, when the water level of the Mekong is low enough, a bamboo bridge is built to Koh Pen Island. Earlier, we could drive our jeeps over this bridge, but unfortunately that is no longer possible. However, it can still be crossed on foot. We continue our way along the Mekong, driving through small, picturesque villages. The final stretch to Phnom Penh leads over small unpaved roads and villages. We visit an old pagoda with a building from the French colonial period. Just before Phnom Penh, we take a ferry to cross the Mekong one last time. In the late afternoon, you arrive in the capital, where you will say goodbye to your guide and support team. Driving through Cambodia by jeep for 4 days is an unforgettable experience and an adventure.
