Motorcycle trip Mongolia – Adventure through steppe and desert
This motorcycle journey Mongolia – Adventure through steppe and desert takes us from Ulaanbaatar steadily south past the Earth Mother stone through the vast steppe landscape with breathtaking rock formations at Ikh Gazariin Chuluu and Zagaan Suvraga. A turn to the west brings us to the "Flaming Cliffs," where many a dinosaur bone has been recovered from the reddish clay. At the southernmost point of the journey, we are greeted by the spectacular Vulture Gorge with a small surprise. After passing through a very narrow gorge, the route leads us along the dune belt of Khongoriin Els. We pitch our camp directly in the dune and cross it in the morning. The journey then takes us west through ancient weathered rock landscapes. From Gurvantes we head north again, crossing various types of desert until we reach a very beautiful gorge at Ikh Khalbaganat Uul. From here, we go east to the river Ongi Gol. Nestled beautifully by this river is the huge ruin of the monastery complex of Ongiin Khiid. A radical change in landscape awaits us as we push north into the mountains of Khangai. After seeing forests again for the first time in a long while, a lush green volcanic landscape awaits us at the waterfall of Orchon. Along Orchon, we travel to Kharkorin, the former capital of Mongolia during the time of Genghis Khan with the famous monastery complex Erende Zuu. To finish, we briefly cross the steppe one more time and say goodbye to the desert in the dune Mongol Els. The river Tuul takes us back to Ulaanbaatar, where civilization catches up with us.
During the expedition, you have the option to follow the tour guide in the car or behind the motorcycle or even ride ahead (free riding!).

Daily program: Guided motorcycle tour Mongolia - Into the Gobi Desert
Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar
After the long flight, you arrive at Ulaanbaatar airport in the morning. Experience shows that jetlag is tough; we first take a taxi to the accommodation and have coffee. After all participants have arrived, a short city tour awaits you with a visit optionally to the Gandan Monastery, the Winter Palace, the Soviet monument with an overview of the city, and the Chijin Lama Monastery in the city center. In the evening, we go out to eat together and discuss the tour.
Day 2: Start of the Enduro Tour to the Gobi Desert
Early in the morning, we prepare motorcycles and support vehicles and will leave the city heading east. We circle the Bogd Khan Uul mountains towards Zuunmod and then head off the asphalt into the vastness of the steppe landscape. A short stop at the Mother Earth stone Eej Khad shows us the Buddhist culture. From now on, we will be speeding through the steppe southwards until we reach the surreal rock landscape of Ikh Gazariin Chuluu, where we will set up our camp. Approximately 333 km
Day 3: Ikh Gazariin Chuluu - Tsagaan Suvraga
The next day we continue south until we reach a rugged hill chain, the landscape of Tsagaan Suvraga. The landscape is characterized by red erosion remnants. With a bit of imagination, many forms can be recognized here that gave the area its name. Approximately 225 km
Day 4: Zombie Town and Dinosaur Bones
On this day, we drive quite a distance west until we reach the Zombie Town Mandal Ovoo. A short refueling stop forces us to stop, but then we quickly head south to the Flaming Cliffs. The area literally starts to burn in the evening light due to the reddish clay soil, hence the name. After every rain, new dinosaur bones are unearthed, and scientific teams from around the world are searching for new species. Approximately 225 km
Day 5: The huge sand dune Khongoriin Els
First, we drive east to the Zuun Saykhany Nuruu mountains, where the Vulture Gorge is located. Many vultures actually fly through the air, and we take a half-hour hike into the protected gorge. Then we drive back west over a pass, where stopping is worthwhile. A challenge with our enduros, but for locals in a car, it’s a barrier that is attempted to be overcome by all means. The effort is worth it; the subsequent gorge to pass through is spectacular. After overcoming the mountains, we drive along the huge sand dune Khongoriin Els. Those experienced in sand riding will get their money's worth; newcomers will have the chance to experience their first sand riding in peace. In a wonderfully beautiful location, we will camp in the middle of the dune. Approximately 250 km
Day 6: Enduro action in the Gobi Desert
In the morning, we first have to cross the dune, but the 15 kilometers will be conquerable for all participants. If more sand riding is desired, we can also head west over the dune. Otherwise, we drive back into the mountains along an ancient valley to Gurvantes. From here, the southwestern point of the journey, we head north again until we set up camp at Gojoot. Maybe we will find the spring that is marked on the maps, but is usually dry. Approximately 220 km
Day 7: The Gobi Desert in all its variations
Today we are heading north through all the variations of the Gobi Desert. The sand becomes rockier, and dried river valleys need to be crossed. After Bayanlig, the route leads us back up into the mountains until we pass through one of the most beautiful gorges of the tour. After crossing the mountains, we will camp at the northern edge of the mountains. Approximately 200 km

Day 8: On the way to the ruin landscape of Ongiin Khid
A long day awaits us, but the following rest day by the Ongiin river drives us to ride through the steppe landscape on a good track heading east. After leaving a few small towns behind, we reach the Ongiin Gol river. The crossing for motorcycles is easy thanks to a footbridge; the support vehicle will successfully cross the river. The last kilometers become hillier until we reach the huge ruin landscape of Ongiin Khid, where a Ger (Mongolian yurt) camp with all amenities awaits us. Approximately 290 km
Day 9: A day we can spend with or without a motorcycle
Today we have earned a rest day. Time to extensively explore the monastery ruins, swim in the river, and explore the interesting surroundings more closely.
Day 10: Enduro adventure over green deserts and through volcanic landscapes
With renewed strength, a fast ride through the steppe to the north awaits us until we experience a drastic landscape change in the Khangai mountains. From Uyanga, we ascend a gold miner's valley through the green meadows. We drive through lush green low mountain landscapes and even encounter forests again. At Bat Olzij, we turn into the Orkhon valley, which is beautifully shaped by volcanic eruptions. We drive further up the river, past black lava boulders until we arrive at the Ulan Gol waterfall.
Day 11: By motorcycle to the famous Erdene Zuu Monastery
Today we ride downriver through the bizarre lava and basalt landscape of the Orkhon valley until we encounter the former capital of Mongolia, Kharkorin. Kharkorin was founded during the time of Genghis Khan and is famous for the impressive Erdene Zuu Monastery. This huge monastery complex is a must for every Mongolia trip, and you delve deeper into the history of the country. We will spend the night in a beautiful Ger camp overlooking the town. Approximately 100 km
Day 12: One last time chasing our motorcycle through the sand
After the shock of the green Orkhon valley, we will ride through the steppe one last time and take the opportunity to practice the sand experience collected in the Dünggald Mongol Els. We camp at the edge of the dunes and enjoy the endless expanse of the steppe. Approximately 140 km
Day 13: From the steppe back to civilization in Ulaanbaatar
Today we ride northeast through the steppe until we reach the Tuul river. We will ride along it until we reach the civilization of Ulaanbaatar. In the evening, we will experience Ulaanbaatar's city life one last time at a farewell dinner and then say goodbye to the land and drivers in a cozy gathering. Approximately 265 km
