OVERVIEW
Motorcycle travel through Mongolia
This enduro tour shows you the mountainous side of Mongolia. First easy-going up to the volcanic areas and then quite challenging in off-road mode over the Khangai Mountains at almost 3000m height. Passing hot springs and further through the green mountains to the waterfall. Back to civilization through the steppe to Ulaanbaatar.
Introduction to motorcycle travel through Mongolia - Khangai
The motorcycle travel tour leads to the Khangai Mountains in the center of Mongolia in the Archangai region. On this motorcycle trip, we will traverse beautiful facets of the Mongolian landscape; endless meadows, dry steppe, rugged mountains, a sand dune, and even forest! Out of the big city of Ulan-Baator and off the asphalt into the steppe towards the southeast. A relaxed off-road experience on dirt roads with gentle hills awaits us until we reach the dune "Mongol Els". We will circle it to the north until we reach Ogij Nuur Lake. An impressive change in landscape is on the way as we first head to the hot spring of Zencher and then to the nature reserve at Terchijn Zagaan Nuur. This unique landscape was shaped by volcanic eruptions and includes a large lake, extinct craters, basalt columns, and gravel fields. From the north, we now need to cross the central mountain massif to the south and we will almost reach the 3000m mark. At the southern edge of the mountains, we head east again through bizarre rock formations and past the hot spring Shargalzhuut. The most challenging stage awaits us at Naiman Nuur, and on the way to the beautiful Orchontal, we will reach the large waterfall after several river crossings. Downstream of the Orchon, we will encounter Kharkorin with the famous Erdene Zuu Monastery. Finally, we will traverse the endless expanses of the steppe once more until we reach Ulan-Baator again. This motorcycle travel offers an unforgettable adventure in Mongolia.
Daily program: Motorcycle adventure through the mountains of Khangai
Day 1: Arrival in Ulaanbaatar
After the long flight, you will arrive in Ulaanbaatar in the morning. Experience-wise, jet lag can be tough, so we will first take a taxi to the accommodation and have coffee. Once all participants have arrived, a small city tour awaits you, with optional visits to the Gandan Monastery, the Winter Palace, the Soviet Memorial with a view over the city, and the Chijin Lama Monastery in the city center. In the evening, we will go out for dinner together and have the tour briefing.
Day 2: Out of Civilization and into the Steppe to the First Sand Dune
In the morning, we set off on the enduro through the Central Mountain Range of Mongolia - Khangai, making the motorcycles and support vehicle ready and leaving the city to the southwest in the morning. The route leads us along the Tuul River to just before the first dune 'Mongol Els'. We will set up our camp in a beautiful small mountain range at the edge of the dune.
Day 3: Erdene Kamp Monastery - Bathing in the Hot Spring Zencher
We drive north along the 'Mongol Els' to the asphalt road Ulan-Baator - Kharakorum. Those who feel like playing in the sand after breakfast can let loose in the 'Mongol Els'. Otherwise, we will drive around the dune and make a detour to the Erdene Kamp Monastery, which lies idyllically in the Khogno Khan Mountains. From here, we head north to Ogij Nuur, a blue mountain lake. Hardened ones can take a short dip to wash off the dust. After a small refreshment, we will continue westward along the hilly lakeshore until we reach Zencher at the foothills. Slightly irritated by the Alpine backdrop, we will jump into the hot spring in the evening and enjoy the mountain panorama.
Day 4: Zencher Spring - Khorgo Volcanic Landscape
After a short drive, we reach the district capital Zerzerleg. There we will shop, and perhaps we will even find fresh vegetables at the market. Heading west over a mountain pass, we will reach the wondrous rock formations 'Taikhar Chuluu' near Ikh Tamir. On a well-built asphalt road, we pass the impressive gorge of Chuluut Gol and get a glimpse of the volcanic landscape of Terchijn Zagaan Nuur National Park, our destination for the day. Our final destination for the day is a romantically located valley in front of the extinct Khorgo volcano.
Day 5: From the Volcano to the Foot of the Khangai Mountains
In the morning, we will climb the volcano and enjoy the view over the basalt gravel field. Additionally, we will visit the cave of the yellow dog and the ice cave (both collapsed caves). Afterwards, we will drive to Zagaan Nuur (the white lake) and circle it on dirt roads to the north until we cross the asphalt road at the end of the national park. From now on, we are really going into the mountains! After the first water crossing, the mountains begin, and we will refuel man and machine in Changai and find a nice camping spot by the Urd Terchijn Gol River near Ondorboorog.
Day 6: Mountain Crossing between Three-Thousand-Meter Peaks
Today, we will cross the mountains and almost touch the 3000 meter mark. We drive upstream along the river and after descending from the pass, we arrive at Gurvanbulag, the westernmost point of our journey. From here, we will drive through the impressive mountain landscape towards the east, where we will set up camp at the Gänseschlucht.
Day 7: Mountain Festival in Gänseschlucht
Halfway through our journey and a day of rest. We have time to renew our strength, explore the unique mountain landscape with the oldest rocks of Mongolia, or take a little trip to the Mandal Monastery, one of the few monasteries that were not destroyed during communist times.
Day 8: Hard Enduro to the Lakes Plateau
Freshly recovered, we devote ourselves today to the toughest part of our enduro journey. First, we head to the district capital Bayanchongor and from there to the hot spring Shargalzhuut. We drive upstream along the river until we reach the challenging pass. Now we have a relaxing downhill ride to Uyanga, but tough terrain still awaits us until we arrive at Naiman Nuur, a high-altitude lakes plateau.
Fragen stellen
Day 9: From the 8 Lakes to the Waterfall
Unfortunately, the connection from Naiman Nuur to the Orchontal is not passable, so we will ride back down to Uyanga. From there we head north through a gold mining valley into the lush green Alpine idyll until Bat-Olsij, where we meet the Orchon River. We drive up the basalt lava valley to the Ulaan-Gol waterfall and check into the Ger-Camp. We have the rest of the day to explore the waterfall and enjoy the warm showers of the camp thoroughly.
Day 10: Through the Orchontal to Erdene Zuu Monastery
Today we will ride through the bizarre lava and basalt landscape of the Orchontal until we reach the former capital of Mongolia, Kharkorin. Kharkorin was founded during the time of Genghis Khan and is famous for the imposing monastery 'Erdene Zuu'. This huge monastery complex is a must on any Mongolia trip, and one dives deeper into the history of the country. We will spend the night in a beautiful Ger-Camp overlooking the city.
Day 11: Out of the Mountains, into the Steppe
We leave the central mountain range behind us and drive far into the Mongolian steppe for our conclusion. It goes steadily southeast until we reach the provincial town of 'Delgerchaan'. Just before the place, we will pass through a hill chain where we will search for a nice spot for the night.
Day 12: Through the Steppe to the Castle Ruins
We continue to traverse the steppe and will now get a small impression of the Gobi Desert, which is not much further south. The land becomes very dry and the vegetation minimal. In the evening, we reach a monastery complex made of slate that was built and destroyed a long time ago. After visiting, we drive another 30 kilometers through increasingly rugged rock landscapes until we reach a beautiful valley basin and arrive at a Ger-Camp.
Day 13: One Last Time with 90 through the Steppe
Today we will strictly head north through the steppe. Great paths allow speeds of around 90 km/h, so we will again feel civilization in the late afternoon. In the evening, we will enjoy city life in Ulan-Baator one last time during a farewell dinner and then bid farewell to the land and drivers in a cozy round.
Day 14: Departure from Mongolia and Return Flight
The departure is approaching. The taxi will take you to the airport, and you will be back home on the same day.
