Switzerland Travel and Vacation – Good to know
Essential information for your trip
Visa requirements for Switzerland
Switzerland is part of the Schengen area, so many travelers do not need a visa for stays of up to 90 days. For stays over 90 days, a visa application must be submitted. The application can be done online via the website of the Swiss Embassy or consulates. It is not available on arrival, so plan ahead!
The best airports for your arrival
The Zurich Airport (ZRH) is the largest and best-connected airport in Switzerland. It offers regular international flights and good train connections to the country. Alternatively, Geneva (GVA) and Basel (BSL) are good options, especially for traveling to Western or Northern Switzerland. Check the connections and choose the best airport for your destination.
Currency information and payment methods
The local currency is the Swiss Franc (CHF). Although credit cards are widely accepted, it is advisable to carry some cash for small purchases and in rural areas. Many businesses also accept debit cards. Be aware of additional fees when using Mastercard or Visa for payment. ATMs are available everywhere.
Vaccinations and travel insurance
In general, no vaccinations are required for entering Switzerland, but travel insurance is highly recommended. This should cover medical emergencies and trip cancellations. Review the insurance policies carefully. It is also advisable to have an emergency number with you in case you need medical assistance.
Driving license and SIM cards
Visitors from the EU do not need an international driving license; a national driving license is sufficient. To purchase a SIM card, visit local shop providers such as Swisscom or Sunrise. The cards are available in most stores and at the airport. Many providers offer prepaid options that are ideal for tourists. Don’t forget to check your device for local network frequency.
