Self-drive 4x4 safari in Namibia

This namibia self drive safari runs 10 days across Namibia and Botswana in a 4x4 Toyota Hilux, covering around 2,500 km of tarmac, gravel, and sand track. The route starts in Windhoek, heads north for the namibia etosha safari section, then east to Rundu and the Caprivi Strip before reaching Victoria Falls. Crossing into Botswana, the botswana safari tour leg covers Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta gateway at Maun. Return is through the Kalahari to Windhoek. Vehicle, camping gear, GPS, and park fees are included. Fuel, sleeping bag, and insurance are not. Groups of 6 to 12 people.

Namibia

The namibia self drive safari begins in Windhoek and moves north through Etosha National Park, one of the finest wildlife areas in southern Africa, before heading east toward the Angolan border and the Caprivi Strip.

Days 1–4
Erlebnis-Reisen Afrika

Windhoek – Etosha

Your namibia self drive safari starts with an airport transfer to Windhoek city center, followed by a full vehicle briefing and introduction to the 4x4 safari namibia equipment at the workshop. The convoy then heads north to Etosha National Park, arriving at the famous Okaukuejo waterhole in time for the evening game session. Elephant, lion, and black rhino regularly visit after dark. Tents and camping equipment are provided — participants are asked to help with setup and pack-down. (450 km, paved road)

Offroad-Reisen Botswana Etosha Fort Namutoni Tierherden

Etosha National Park

A full day dedicated to the namibia etosha safari experience. Morning game drive through the park with stops at key waterholes where elephant, lion, zebra, giraffe, and antelope gather in the open salt pan. The wide-open landscape of Etosha makes this the top namibia safari tour wildlife day of the route — clear sightlines and concentrated herds. Tonight's camp is at Fort Namutoni in the eastern park, a historic German colonial fort with its own waterhole active into the night. (120 km, sandy track)

Erlebnis-Reisen Afrika

Etosha – Rundu

The convoy heads east via Tsumeb and Grootfontein toward Rundu on the Angolan border. This long tarmac leg is the transit section of the self drive safari namibia route, giving teams time to settle into convoy rhythm. The Okavango River runs along the Angolan bank here, offering a first look at the waterway that eventually forms the delta further south. Overnight at Sarasungu River Lodge on the riverbank. A good night to hear the namibia overland tour at its quietest — just the river and the sounds of the bush. (360 km, paved road)

Offroad-Reisen Botswana Caprivizipfel Elefantenherden Zambesi

Caprivi Strip – Zambezi

The Caprivi Strip is the narrowest leg of the namibia botswana tour, a panhandle corridor between Angola and Botswana. Elephant herds migrate freely here between countries, and the road through this strip is a genuine namibia off road tour highlight. A short stop at the Popa Falls breaks the drive before the convoy reaches Katima Mulilo and the Zambezi River. Overnight at Zambezi River Lodge on the riverbank. (500 km, paved road or sandy track)

Zambia / Zimbabwe

The victoria falls safari tour day crosses two borders in a single run, entering Zimbabwe briefly before pushing into Zambia to reach the falls from the Zambian side.

Day 5
Offroad-Reisen Namibia, Etosha-Nationalpark

Victoria Falls

The victoria falls safari tour day crosses the Ngoma Bridge into Zimbabwe and continues to Zambia to reach Mosi-oa-Tunya — the smoke that thunders. The Zambezi drops 108 m over a 1,700 m wide curtain, twice the height of Niagara Falls, with spray clouds reaching 500 m and visible from 60 km. Water volume is highest in April after the rains. Overnight at Sprayview Hotel. (130 km, paved road)

Botswana

The botswana safari tour section covers Chobe National Park, the Savuti wilderness, and the Okavango Delta gateway at Maun — the most technically demanding off-road days of the entire route.

Days 6–9
Offroad-Reisen Botswana Chobe Elefantenherden Camping

Botswana – Chobe

After a morning visit to the falls, the convoy crosses into Botswana to begin the botswana safari tour leg. Tracks into Chobe National Park shift from gravel to soft sand — full 4x4 engagement required. The botswana chobe safari camp sits at the park boundary and elephant herds are common overnight visitors. Tent footprints in the sand at dawn are not unusual. The Chobe River area holds one of the highest elephant concentrations on the continent. (150 km, gravel track)

Questions about the tour itinerary?

Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.

Savuti – Off-Road Botswana

The longest and most challenging 4x4 self drive safari day on the route. The convoy crosses the Chobe backcountry through small villages including Mabele, Kavimba, and Kataba before reaching Savuti and the Gcoha Hills. This is the namibia botswana safari section at its most remote — no tarmac, minimal infrastructure, and long stretches of deep sand. Vehicle recovery skills may be tested. Camping at Savuti campsite under an undisturbed sky. (160 km, sandy track)

Offroad-Reisen Botswana Chobe Maun Delta

Savuti – Okavango Delta (Maun)

The convoy follows the Makwikhwe Sand Ridge — the old coastline — south through Chobe toward Maun, the gateway to the Okavango Delta. This namibia camping safari leg is the last full off-road day before returning to tarmac. Arriving in Maun opens the option for a two-day fly-in delta extension — mokoro canoe trips, island walking, and game on foot in the inner delta. Camping at Audi Camp, Maun. (200 km, sandy track)

Offroad-Reisen Botswana Krokodile Ghanzi Zelten

Maun – Ghanzi

Morning visit to a Botswana crocodile farm before the convoy moves west toward the Namibian border through Ghanzi. Botswana's crocodiles have a well-documented reputation as some of the largest in Africa — the farm visit lets you verify that at close range. This is a southern africa safari transition day: the landscape shifts from delta waterways to the edge of the Kalahari. Camping at Ghanzi. (290 km, paved road)

Namibia – Return

The final leg crosses the Kalahari back to Windhoek, completing the namibia botswana tour loop and ending the self drive circuit where it began.

Days 10–11
Offroad-Reisen Botswana Zurück Windhoek Bed Breakfast

Ghanzi – Windhoek

The final driving day heads east from Ghanzi through the Kalahari via Gobabis back to Windhoek, closing the namibia botswana tour loop. The Kalahari crossing is a long tarmac run across red sand and sparse scrubland — a deliberate contrast to the sand tracks of the previous days. Overnight in Windhoek with bed and breakfast accommodation. Dinner at a local Windhoek restaurant rounds out the namibia overland tour. (510 km, paved road)

Erlebnis-Reisen Afrika

Departure

Transfer to Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport. The namibia self drive safari ends here — a 10-day circuit through Etosha, the Caprivi, Victoria Falls, Chobe, the Savuti, and the Okavango Delta edge, covering approximately 2,500 km across two countries in a self-driven 4x4.
