Turkmenistan Travel and Vacation – Good to know
A visa is necessary to enter Turkmenistan. Apply for it in advance through the embassy or consulate, as it is not available upon arrival. The application can be submitted online, but it is advisable to allow enough time. The visa policy is strict, so make sure to prepare all necessary documents to avoid issues.
Ashgabat International Airport is the main airport and the best point of contact for international flights. From here, you have good connections to other cities. Smaller airports like in Mary or Turkmenabat can also be serviced, but the connections are more limited, so plan your arrival well!
The local currency is the Turkmenistani Manat (TMT). Credit cards are accepted in major cities; however, it is advisable to carry cash, especially in rural areas. Make sure you have enough TMT for your stay, as the possibility of exchanging money may be limited. Debit cards can be used in large hotels and stores.
