MOTORCYCLE-TOURS · NAMIBIA
This kaokoland motorcycle tour covers 2,200 km through Africa's last true wilderness over 12 days.
The Journey
This kaokoland enduro is built for experienced riders only. You cover 2,200 km from Windhoek into Africa's last true wilderness and back — 70% on loose gravel, sand, rocky trail, or dry riverbed. The route runs culture first (Himba settlements, Opuwo), full expert enduro in the middle (van zyl pass enduro, Marienfluss, Hoanib riverbed), and wildlife recovery at the end (desert elephants at Purros, Sesfontein hot springs). The 4x4 support vehicle with mechanic stays within radio range on every stage of this namibia off road expert tour.
Namibia
This kaokoland motorcycle tour runs 2,200 km through Namibia's most remote wilderness: Khowarib Gorge, Opuwo, Epupa Falls, Van Zyl's Pass, Marienfluss, desert elephant territory, and the Hoanib riverbed. Expert riders only.
You land at Hosea Kutako International (WDH) and transfer 45 km to the Windhoek guesthouse. The afternoon is yours to adjust to the altitude — Windhoek sits at 1,700 m above sea level. The evening group briefing for the kaokoland motorcycle tour covers route, bikes, radio protocol, and river-crossing rules. You pick up your rental enduro tonight so you can familiarise yourself with the controls before Day 2. Welcome dinner included.
First riding day. The B1 north through Okahandja and Otjiwarongo is fast tarmac — coffee stops every 150 km. Around midday you leave the main road for gravel and pick up the first namibia off road expert tour terrain toward Outjo. The soil shifts from brown to deep red. Warthogs, ostriches, and kudu cross the road on the approach to Kamanjab — the last proper fuel stop before kaokoland enduro country begins. Early night; the Khowarib Gorge trail starts at dawn. Overnight: guesthouse. Breakfast and dinner included.
The real ride starts here. You drop into the Khowarib Gorge on a narrow rocky track that follows the dry riverbed through a red sandstone canyon for 25 km. Loose surface, waist-deep sand sections, rock steps, and boulder lines — the guide rides first and shows each passage. The 4x4 support vehicle takes the parallel detour and meets you at the canyon exit. The afternoon is fast namibia expert enduro tour gravel into the Hoanib valley. Camp tonight in the bush with zero light pollution. Dinner cooked on the bush grill.
The himba tribe motorcycle tour stage. You ride through Himba and Herero settlements on the gravel road toward Opuwo — the guide handles introductions and translation at each stop. The Himba coat their skin with a mix of butterfat and ochre; the Herero women wear long Victorian-style dresses, a colonial legacy. Opuwo is the capital of Kaokoland and the last real town on the route. Refuel, restock water, and get a taste of African market energy before the convoy disappears north into the wilderness. Overnight: guesthouse. Breakfast and dinner included.
The epupa falls motorcycle tour day. 180 km north of Opuwo on rough gravel through Mopane forest and red-rock country, then a steep loose descent into the Kunene river valley. The Kunene marks the border between Namibia and Angola. At Epupa the river breaks across a 500 m-wide cataract — baobabs grow from the rock at the water's edge. You camp on the Namibian bank; Angola is visible across the channel. The afternoon is free for swimming in the safe upstream pools or sitting under a baobab. Overnight: guesthouse or camping. Breakfast and dinner included.
The day every rider on this van zyl's pass motorcycle tour has been waiting for. You ride back south from Epupa toward Opuwo, then turn off onto the track to the top of the pass. Van Zyl's Pass is a one-way downhill-only descent: 600 m drop over 10 km of broken rock, loose scree, and tight switchbacks through Mopane forest. In several places the track is a staircase of boulders the size of a motorcycle wheel. The guide briefs each rider at the top; you descend one at a time. By the bottom you are in the Marienfluss — one of the most remote valleys in Africa. Overnight: guesthouse or camping. Breakfast and dinner included.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
You wake up in the Marienfluss. Yesterday was rock — today is sand. The wide plain and dry riverbed give a long sandy stage: soft surface, deep ruts in places, momentum everything. The route follows the Marienfluss north to the Kunene border river for a viewpoint stop — swimming is not an option here, the river is full of crocodiles. You turn south and ride back into the wild Kaokoland interior for the night. The 4x4 sets up the kitchen; the guide builds the fire. Overnight: bush camp. Breakfast and dinner included.
A day of landscape changes. South through Orupembe across rolling gravel plains with the Hartmann Mountains on the horizon, then two dry riverbeds crossing east-west — soft sand with rocky edges, the 4x4 meeting you on the far side of each. By mid-afternoon you reach Purros: the core territory for desert elephant motorcycle namibia sightings. These elephants walk up to 70 km daily between water sources and move through the valley on established routes. If a herd is on the track into camp, cut the engine and wait. Stay 100 m back. Overnight: guesthouse or camping. Breakfast and dinner included.
The hoanib river motorcycle track day. Leave Purros south-east into the Hoanib valley on a Mars-like gravel plain — wide open, no vegetation, deep red rock. You drop into the Hoanib riverbed itself: sand riding in the shade of camelthorn trees, with actual water crossings depending on the season. Elephant dung on the trail means animals ahead — the guide signals when to stop. Fuel and a fort walk in Sesfontein, then a short ride to Warmquelle for the natural hot-spring pool. Wash off the dust. Overnight: guesthouse or camping. Breakfast and dinner included.
The last day in Kaokoland. The route follows jeep tracks south through animal-rich plains and a few more dry riverbeds before joining the main gravel road toward Kamanjab. Zebra, giraffe, springbok, and warthog cross the road on the approach to town. The rhythm of the convoy is easy today — stops for photos whenever anyone wants. The guesthouse in Kamanjab is the same as Day 2; the hot shower on arrival is a tradition at this point in every kaokoland enduro departure. Overnight: guesthouse. Breakfast and dinner included.
Enduro riding is over. Motorcycles load onto the support vehicle and the group transfers back to Windhoek by 4x4 — roughly 6 hours via Otjiwarongo and Okahandja with lunch stops on the way. Arrive Windhoek late afternoon. The evening is free; most riders return to Joe's Beerhouse for the final group dinner. Twelve days of kaokoland motorcycle tour stories fill a long table easily. Optional: OVERCROSS can book a two-day Etosha extension on the spot. Overnight: guesthouse. Breakfast and dinner included.
Departure day or the start of an extension. Airport transfer to Hosea Kutako (WDH) can be arranged by the guide at cost. For those extending: Etosha National Park (2 days), Sossusvlei dunes (3 days), and Swakopmund coast (2 days) are all available through Overcross on request. The namibia expert enduro tour covered 2,200 km of some of the most technically demanding and visually distinctive terrain in Africa.
