OFF-ROAD-TOURS · LIBYA
Ghadames Libya and the vast Libyan Sahara form the heart of this demanding 4x4 expedition — a 22-day north africa 4x4 expedition for experienced self-drivers only.
The Journey
Italy / Tunisia
The ghadames libya 4x4 expedition begins with a ferry crossing from Genoa to Tunis, the first leg of this sahara crossing into North Africa.
The ghadames libya expedition assembles at the ferry port in Genoa on Saturday afternoon. The Tanit ferry departs toward Tunis, giving the team time to run final checks on gear and get acquainted before reaching North Africa.
The convoy drives to Djerba, stopping at Lofi's workshop — an OVERCROSS partner since 2001 — for a final vehicle inspection before the sahara crossing begins. From here, the group crosses the Ras Ajdir border into Libya, where local partner Fethi manages all permits and formalities for this libya offroad tour.
Libya
The core of the libyan sahara expedition crosses Hammada al Hamrah, the Erg Ubari dune sea, the Mandara Lakes, the Akakus Mountains, and the ancient caravan city of Ghadames.
Connection stages push the convoy south into the Hammada al Hamrah. The tarmac gives way to rough gravel and stone tracks as the offroad expedition enters the Al-Assad highland region before dropping toward the eastern smuggler route heading deep into the Sahara.
The sahara expedition peaks in the Erg Ubari, where horizon-to-horizon dunes demand full 4x4 skill. The convoy navigates through the sand sea kilometer by kilometer, southeast toward the northern fringe of Idhan Awbari. After two to three hard days in the dunes, the group reaches the Mandara Lakes — a striking desert oasis where a rest day is taken if the schedule allows.
Around Sebha, the terrain becomes a daily test: pulling vehicles out of soft sand is the routine, shovels are standard kit, and the golden rule is ‘Yalla, Yalla — Gas, GAS, GAS!’ with the right feel for momentum across dune crests. This is the desert adventure tour at its most demanding.
Questions about the tour itinerary?
Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
The convoy enters the ‘Garden of Allah’ and drives toward the Akakus Mountains. Two to three days are spent in Akakus National Park absorbing ancient rock paintings and open canyon scenery — the akakus mountains tour segment gives time to inspect vehicles and let the landscape sink in.
From the depths of the Libyan Sahara, the convoy heads north on a fast offroad connection stage across the Hammada toward Tripoli. Before reaching the capital, the route switches to asphalt. The africa overland tour section continues through Ghomrassen back to Hammamet, where the team spends a final night in a hotel with an infinity pool before heading to La Goulette.
Dusty tracks along the Algerian border lead to Ghadames, the UNESCO-listed city that served as a hub of tuareg sahara caravan trade for centuries. Reaching ghadames libya marks the end of the deep-desert phase. From here the convoy heads north back to Tunisia, where local host Rouf provides a warm dinner in Sidi Bouzid before the group drives to Tunis.
Tunisia / Italy
The return sahara crossing brings the convoy north through Tunisia to the Tunis ferry and back to Genoa.
The group has time to walk through the Tunis souks before boarding the ferry back to Genoa. The north africa 4x4 expedition closes 22 days after it began — with a full crossing of the Libyan Sahara, dirty vehicles, and a clear picture of what real sahara desert adventure means.
