MOTORCYCLE-TOURS · KENYA
The africa enduro expedition runs 21 days from Cape Town to Nairobi — roughly 6,000 km across 8 countries on your own enduro motorcycle. This is Stage One of the TransAfrica route, covering the most technically demanding stretch south of the equator.
The Journey
The africa enduro expedition was born out of TransAfrica planning. Stage One runs Cape Town to the equator in 21 days. You start at the Cape of Good Hope the morning after arrival, then head east along the Garden Route. The motorcycle expedition africa 21 days climbs Sani Pass into Lesotho, crosses Swaziland, and enters Zimbabwe. Victoria Falls and the Cape to Cairo bridge follow. Zambia, Malawi, and Tanzania lead to the final ride into Nairobi on day 21 — the end of the motorcycle tour cape town nairobi circuit.
South Africa, Lesotho & Swaziland
Stage One of the africa enduro expedition starts in Cape Town and pushes north through South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, and into Zimbabwe. 6 countries and roughly 3,000 km before the equator.
The africa enduro expedition begins in the air. You land at OR Tambo International at 07:00, clear customs, and board a connecting flight to Cape Town. The expedition team meets at camp. Bikes are checked, customs papers sorted, and the evening ends with beer and a first look at the map spread across the table. You sleep in tents. Your bike is parked outside the gate.
Kilometer zero. The cape town to kenya motorcycle route starts at the Cape of Good Hope at sunrise. First photo. Then at 09:00 the engines start. Chapman's Peak Drive is the first real road of the expedition — cameras earn their keep here. By midday the Garden Route begins at Mossel Bay. From day one, the rule holds: breakfast and dinner only. The road burns off anything extra. You overnight in George after a full first day in the saddle.
Tents packed and moving again. The enduro expedition south africa eastern leg opens up today. Garden Route asphalt gives way to gravel. The route runs roughly 500 km east through the Eastern Cape, ending at the grave of Harry Potter — a local landmark and the expedition's first iconic stop. Rest up. Tomorrow the serious climbing begins.
Sunrise camp, 60 km to Hofmeyr for breakfast and fuel, then 650 km of federal roads through KwaZulu-Natal. This is one of the hardest days of the first week. The road eventually reaches the Lesotho border. Cross into the Kingdom and climb. Elevation rises quickly. The air thins. The horizon drops away below you. Overnight in Lesotho at altitude.
The sani pass motorcycle tour is the centrepiece of the Lesotho stage. You climb to the highest point of the entire expedition — above 2,870 m. Cold air, hot coffee, then the descent begins: 1,000 m down the most photographed pass in Lesotho. At the bottom, the Drakensberg and the KwaZulu-Natal Battlefields open out. This is the third border crossing of the trip. Riders from previous expeditions consistently rate this day the best of three weeks.
Morning routine: map check, bikes running, coffee. Today's motorcycle overland africa stage runs back roads through South Africa into Swaziland on mostly smooth tarmac through mountain country. The destination is Hlane Royal National Park — lions, elephants, white rhinos, and giraffe in the wild. Swaziland is small, tightly administered, and surprisingly green.
Short day: 220 km through Swaziland forest roads to Hazyview, just south of the Kruger Park northern boundary. The transafrica enduro tour crosses into Mpumalanga here — all tanks are filled, bodies and bikes alike, before tomorrow's Zimbabwe push. By 3,000 km the expedition has crossed Western Cape, Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Lesotho, Swaziland, and Mpumalanga.
Zimbabwe, Zambia & Malawi
The trans africa motorcycle tour continues north through Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi. Victoria Falls, Lake Malawi, and the long open roads of central Africa fill the middle third of the expedition.
Green roads, tropical forest, and a hangover breakfast to ease into the day. The trans africa motorcycle tour enters Zimbabwe. Customs done, the route heads to Masvingo. About 40 km before town, a stop at Great Zimbabwe — the stonework ruins of a 11th-century African civilisation. You ride on heading north-northwest through the afternoon and rest after the longest cultural day of the trip.

Our tour guide is happy to answer any questions about the day-by-day route, stops, and details.
A new day over Africa. Tents down, coffee up, then north-northwest on a mix of on- and off-road through Hwange National Park territory. An optional safari stop here is available depending on group pace. The victoria falls motorcycle tour approach begins — you'll hear the falls before you see them. Overnight camp near Victoria Falls.
The bridge day. At 128 m above the gorge, you cross the Victoria Falls Bridge — built in England in 1903, assembled here for Cecil Rhodes's Cape to Cairo railway plan. The victoria falls motorcycle tour stop can extend for a gorge swing, white-water rafting, or a full Hwange wildlife drive. The Zambezi roars below. Take the extra hour if the group is willing.
Zambia was founded in 1964. The motorcycle expedition africa 21 days route here follows open roads north through a country still finding its shape. English and Bantu languages mix across ethnic groups — Nsenga, Tumbuka, Ngoni, Bisa. The expedition leaves Zimbabwe's tracks behind and cuts its own route through central Zambia heading northeast toward Malawi.
First light over the Malawi border. The kenya enduro expedition route enters its most scenic inland leg: the western shore of Lake Malawi, one of Africa's Great Lakes at 30,000 sq km. You ride with 30,000 square kilometres of water to your right. Pole pole — the Swahili word for slowly — sets the pace here. The border at Songwe River is a casual crossing by expedition standards.
Tanzania & Kenya
The final leg of the cape town to kenya motorcycle route crosses Tanzania and ends in Nairobi. Ngorongoro, Kilimanjaro, and the Kenyan border mark the last 1,500 km of the expedition.
Sunrise over Lake Malawi with fresh coffee from a roadside plantation. Then the Tanzania border. The motorcycle tour cape town nairobi penultimate country opens onto vast open roads heading toward Arusha. The distances in Tanzania are real — set your mental pace accordingly. Overnight camp in the shadow of a landscape that gets bigger every hour.
The motorcycle overland africa route rolls through the Ngorongoro highlands toward Arusha. Breakfast coffee came from a plantation 20 km back. The crater rim is visible from the road — a full Ngorongoro descent can be arranged if the group vote holds. Arusha is the last major town before the Kenya border. Tanks full, provisions stocked.
The sun rises behind Kilimanjaro. The kenya enduro expedition final push rides through wide open land toward the horizon, passing Mount Longido before the Kenya border crossing. After Tanzania customs, the road runs north into Kenya. Nairobi arrives in the late afternoon. The last evening of the expedition: cold Tusker beer, Nyama Choma grilled meat, and the kind of quiet that comes after 6,000 km.
The africa enduro expedition ends here. Depending on your flight, the morning is free in Nairobi. The Maasai Market, Nairobi National Park, and the Karen Blixen Museum are all within reach. Airport transfer is included. The post-expedition meeting back in Tübingen is the final chapter — dates confirmed at booking.
