Namibia Offroad Travel

This tour is a guided self-drive safari in an all-terrain rental vehicle. From Windhoek, it goes through the Etosha National Park past the many scenic highlights that Namibia has to offer. Before the tour, you will receive off-road driving training, and our guide is always on hand during the trip when there are difficult driving situations to handle.

This guided off-road trip through Namibia offers an unforgettable experience. Participants travel in a group, which brings many advantages, including the opportunity to hear insider tips from experienced guides. In addition, a comprehensive tour through various landscapes is offered, which makes the heart of every adventurer beat faster. The tour starts and ends in Windhoek and can be booked in two variations: for 14 days or 21 days. During the 14-day tour, approximately 1800 km and during the 21-day tour approximately 2600 km are covered. This trip is suitable for 4x4 beginners and includes overnight stays in hotels, lodges, and camps, ensuring varied accommodation. Each stage is adapted to the difficulty of the tracks, so both beginners and experienced drivers get their money's worth. Participants can look forward to an exciting journey through Namibia's nature and wildlife, offering both driving pleasure and the opportunity to observe wonderful animals.

Daily program: Guided 4x4 self-drive tour in the wild northeast of Namibia

Day 1: Windhoek

Arrival in Windhoek, transfer to the car rental, vehicle pickup with introduction to the vehicle, own drive to the hotel, check-in at the accommodation. In the afternoon, meeting with the tour guide, getting to know the other participants, discussion of the route and daily routines, optional dinner at a Windhoek restaurant.

Day 2: Before Etosha National Park

Joint departure at the time set the day before. First acclimatization to the vehicle on the best tar road. Short stops in Okahandja and Outjo with optional lunch snack. Arrival at 'Camp Eldorado' just before the entrance to Etosha National Park after about five hours of pure driving time. First setup of the joint camp. Optional dinner at 'Camp Eldorado' in the evening.

Day 3: Western part of Etosha National Park

Day trip through the central and western part of Etosha National Park. After 20 km of tar road, we reach Okaukuejo. Registration for the stay in the national park. Subsequently, drive on good gravel roads to the new Camp Olifantsrus. On the way, visit many waterholes with various wildlife sightings. During the drives on gravel (max. 60 km/h in the park!) opportunities to assess driving behavior for the first time.

Day 4: At Etanga

Early departure in Etosha NP. After 90 km of gravel road and renewed wildlife sightings, the western gate is reached. The town of Opuwo is reached after another 200 km of tar road. Opportunity to refuel and replenish supplies. Subsequently, a good gravel road (…depending on the last rainy season!) leads 90 km just before the town of Etanga. Overnight stay in a riverbed, opportunity for the first short experience in soft sand with reduced tire pressures!

Day 5: Van Zyl's Pass

Today's journey leads to the notorious 'van Zyl's Pass'. From the town of Etanga, only single-lane tracks can be driven. In some places, the 4x4 needs to be engaged even on short climbs. 20 km before the actual pass, the track ends. A rocky path leads over high escarpments, steep ramps, and loose cliffs to the viewpoint at 'van Zyl's Pass'. All participants help scout the best route and build ramps to reduce the height of the rocky steps. Drivers must be instructed when navigating difficult passages. Today's journey demands the highest driving skills from the drivers. As a reward, the overnight camping spot offers a beautiful view over the Mariënfluss plain from the height of the pass.

Day 6: Behind Green Drum

After the once again challenging passage of the pass descent, the north Mariënfluss plain awaits the driver with an easily drivable track. Passing the navigation barrels 'Red Drum', 'Blue Drum', 'Orange Drum', and 'Green Drum', the track leads to the south outlet of the Hartmann Valley. Behind 'Green Drum', a field of moving dunes will also be passed, tempting the first dune driving experiences. The overnight camping spot is planned on a small hill, from which a magnificent panoramic view can be enjoyed.

Day 7: Hartmann Valley

Today's route leads over mostly soft sandy, single-lane tracks to the dune belt at the northern end of the valley with the border river Kunene. Drivers will encounter various soft sand conditions, even the possibility of free driving in the dune belt. A particularly beautiful camping spot is planned on a hill, overlooking the Hartmann Valley with its pastel colors.

Day 8: Marble Camp

The initially soft sandy track changes to rocky terrain with soft sandy crossings through small dry rivers. When transitioning to the Mariënfluss plain, two short and 'crunchy' passages through rock cliffs must be managed. Subsequently, the journey continues through the expanse of the Mariënfluss plain back up to 'Red Drum'. Here, a turn to the south leads over a rocky track and a small steep pass to 'Marble Camp' in the afternoon. Showers and toilets await all participants!

Day 9: Clay Castles

After crossing the Otjiha Pan, the small settlement of Orupembe with a police station, local 'shop', and water point is reached. After filling the water tanks, a pushed gravel road continues southwest, but after about 40 km it is abandoned in favor of a good single-lane path. After 120 kilometers for the day, prehistoric clay deposits are reached. In the evening light, these bright deposits contrast sharply with the surrounding basalt rock and appear like 'clay castles'. The camp is set up at the foot of such a clay formation, not far from the Hoarusib.

Day 10: Purros

Today, no track is driven. Off-road through the gorge of the partially water-carrying Hoarusib River. Only the tracks of previous vehicles indicate the way that can be driven without the risk of sinking. By early afternoon, the Purros campsite directly on the banks of the Hoarusib is reached.

Day 11: Dry River Hoanib

The route leads to the southern dry river Hoanib. It goes over a wide high plateau on a single-lane track with mainly solid ground. The last 10 kilometers lead off-road through narrow valleys to the steep bank of the Hoanib. Camping spot directly at the border marker of the Skeleton Coast National Park.

Day 12: Ongongo Waterfall

The majority of today's stage runs through the sandy Hoanib with a high probability of elephant sightings. Before the turn onto the gravel track, driving skills are required to navigate a powdery flat. The overnight location is a camp at the Ongongo Waterfall. This 'little waterfall' feeds a small natural pool with crystal-clear water… a wonderful refreshment!

Day 13: Khorixas

The highlight of today's journey is the drive through the Khowarib Gorge. Steep, rocky sections alternate with deeply sandy passages in the riverbeds. Powdery flats must also be mastered as well as water crossings. By noon, however, the varied sections end at the tar road to Kamanjab. From Kamanjab to Khorixas, it is about another 100 km of good gravel road via Fransfontein to the solid accommodation. Participants on the 14-day route must now 're-civilize'.

Day 14: Windhoek

... today you are heading back home. The morning is at your disposal for a comfortable drive back to Windhoek. Vehicle return in the afternoon with subsequent transfer to the 'Hosea Kutako International Airport', located 45 km outside of Windhoek.

Day 14: Dry River Huab

Participants of the 21-day tour will travel the route west today over good gravel roads to the Huab dry river. Another 20 km will be driven on soft sandy Ugab. Here, there is once again a high probability of observing desert elephants. The campsite will be set up slightly outside the riverbed.

Day 15: Desolation Valley

After 30 km through the Huab, the 'Desolation Valley', a green valley of the Huab, is reached. The demands on the drivers increase as they exit the valley via a small, very steep pass. Search for a camping spot on the wide heights, far from any civilization!

Day 16: Dry River Ugab

On rocky and hard track through stony desert and wide plains. After 25 km, the prehistoric settlement 'Gai-As' is reached. From here, the track continues another 25 km down into the Ugab dry river. The Ugab is the softest dry river encountered so far. After another 10 km, the campsite is reached on a small hill.

Day 17: Brandberg

Continue through the Ugab. Some passages through reeds and bulrushes are very narrow. Depending on the season, water passages may be possible. After 40 km, the Brandberg, Namibia's highest mountain, is reached. After another 20 km of track, the campsite is set up directly at the foot of the Brandberg.

Day 18: Messum Crater

Once again, a day's stage leads westward. Partly through the Messum dry river, the track enters the coastal Namibia. Sandy ramps must be driven up and down, rocky scree slopes crossed. Overnight stay in the lee of a granite knoll, about 30 km from the Atlantic coast.

Day 19: Spitzkoppe

All day, we head south through coastal Namibia to the monumental rock peaks and domes of the Spitzkoppe. If we arrive at the campsite in time, there will be a wonderful sunset to admire between the red rock domes.

Day 20: Windhoek

Climbing enthusiasts have the opportunity to climb at sunrise in the Spitzkoppe. After the final breakdown of the camp, there will be a circuit through the rocky area of the Spitzkoppe. Subsequently, the tour 'Namibia 4x4 Experience' ends with the return drive to Windhoek. 35 km of gravel roads and 250 km of tar sound like a 'piece of cake' for the drivers now. After arrival in Windhoek, 'check-in' at a solid accommodation. Optional dinner in a restaurant in the evening.

Day 21: Departure

The morning is at your free disposal. Vehicle return in the afternoon with subsequent transfer to the 'Hosea Kutako International Airport', located 45 km outside of Windhoek.

The rental car will be reserved for you by our local partner.
Depending on the season and duration of travel, the price for the rental car per day ranges between 2,700 NAD (approx. 138€) and 3,500 NAD (approx. 178€).
Due to the limited availability of suitable vehicles, we recommend booking early - at least one year in advance or earlier.

Important information about passport, visa & vaccinations:

German citizens need a passport valid for 6 months beyond the end of the trip
No specific vaccinations are required, but vaccinations against tetanus, diphtheria, polio, typhoid, and hepatitis A are recommended.
Malaria prophylaxis is not recommended from June to November. (Dry season)

Basic driving skills and a valid driver's license are required. The trip is suitable for 4x4 beginners, but participants should be willing to tackle challenging offroad routes.
The tour includes challenging offroad trails, especially "Van Zyl's Pass," which requires driving skills. Before the tour starts, all participants will receive offroad driving training, and during the trip, an experienced guide will be available to assist with difficult driving situations.
We recommend that you take out comprehensive travel and vehicle insurance that covers offroad activities.
