Dreams like Marlboro Country, Camel Trophy, Paris to Dakar or riding a motorcycle across the African continent never come true for many. For a handful of them, OVERCROSS offers the opportunity to participate in such a motorcycle expedition. The Trans Africa Tour is one of the last challenges, which is also the absolute highlight for us as an adventure tour operator. Since 2016 we organize despite the MEGA Organizational effort is this enduro expedition by, this expedition is one of the last adventures of this earth. This Africa expedition is technically and scenically everything in the shade, what you have ever experienced as a motorcycle traveler and globetrotter! The last adventure - once across Africa on a motorcycle - is doable!

Trans Africa Motorcycle Tour Itinerary
What it is all about ...
"In search of new adventures, the first destination that came to mind was Africa, because what could be more obvious than traveling the "black" continent with its 53 states and 1001 languages? No continent has appealed to explorers, adventure travelers and the rally scene as much as this one! Everyone who has traveled to Africa several times knows how diverse this continent is.
Thierry Sabine, the inventor of the wild rally from Paris to Dakar, has made many dreams come true. With his motto "if life gets boring, risk it" he led the rally in a real bone-jarring tour over 6000 kilometers to Dakar. The Africa expedition ahead of you demands everything from you in 45 travel days and over 15,000 kilometers across the entire African continent! This Africa crossing is probably one of the last adventures for enduro & motorcycle travelers. Thousands of dusty kilometers full of hardships, efforts and dangers lie ahead of you...
Nevertheless - or just therefore this expedition is one of the last motorcycle adventures, which we can experience at the moment (on the rapidly developing continent of Africa). This enduro trip is only suitable for participants who are ready to enjoy lungs full of dust, pockets full of sand and pure adventure in their bones. Surely this trip is one of the craziest, most exhausting and dangerous things you will ever do, but if you are still reading, you are almost beyond help!
"If life is borig ... - it's probably time to leave the comfort zone and trade in just reading about the couch potato-style adventure for the real Africa adventure." - Joe Küster, founder of OVERCROSS
Itinerary
What you should be prepared for in this motorcycle adventure ...
The typical participants of such an expedition are participants who find the thought of dust-smeared faces, sleeping in the dirt, and limited choice of a few t-shirts, underpants and socks at most for weeks very sexy - and have to grin at this thought as well ;-).
"With well over 100,000 kilometers of Africa experience by now, I can say with a clear conscience that this Africa crossing is far from what you call a package tour. This tour is in all its professional preparation and preparation a hundred percent expedition! That is to say: a voyage of discovery of the continent and of one's own limits. People who see one of the big brand touring enduros as a starting point can be sure that the brand image will be of little use to them on the tour. A fair amount of touring & enduro experience, as well as mental stability, is a requirement to participate in this Trans Africa expedition." Joe Küster.
Arrival day: Transcontinental flight to South Africa
We flew through the night and landed at OR Tambo International Airport around seven in the morning, where we will meet the rest of the team. From Johannesburg we fly on to Cape Town and arrive at Cape Town International Airport (CPT) in the morning. We then drive to the warehouse 30 kilometers away, where we are already expected with the customs papers already done and the motorcycles cleared out. Unload, unpack and sign the Carnet de Passage (ATA). After we have made the motorcycles ready to ride, we do not go to the check-in at the Cape Grace Hotel, with delicious five-star food. Far from it: we drink a cold South African beer, eat crocodile at "Mama Africa" and sleep with our bikes in a warehouse "above the roofs" of Cape Town!
Start of the Trans Africa Motorcycle Tour
At kilometer 0 at the Cape of Good Hope, we take the start picture after sunrise over South Africa. 15,000 kilometers across Africa lie ahead of us!
Past Cape Town we drive around the bay to Sommerset West. After a short stop for a breakfast "to go" we continue to Chapman's Peak. We then drive along the legendary and relaxed Garden Route until we reach Mosel Bay for something solid to eat. Breakfast and dinner will be the only meals we will have for the next days and weeks. An advantage for all those who have a few pounds too much and will leave them on the track day after day. In the late afternoon we will reach Knysna Park before sunset, we will close the first motorcycle travel day on a wildlife safari with a South African sundowner.
Adrenaline on the Garden Route!
We pack the first time the tents and start with our bikes to the bridge 50 kilometers away through. Today we have 211 meters of free fall for breakfast. After a proper adrenaline rush from the highest bungee jumping spot in the world, we are lively and fit for the day and the next stop. We'll hook you up to a zip line that will catapult you through the forest at a height of 30 meters! If you are still hungry, you will get your well deserved breakfast. Afterwards, it's finally back on the road. Contemplative conversations without answers with the visor - along the Garden Route we enjoy life and that we are still alive. After about 500 kilometers of asphalt and gravel we reach the grave of Harry Potter in the village of Cradock. Time for a devotion and time to lay down, because tomorrow is a new day with new adventures in South Africa.
Ascent to the Kingdom of Lesotho
Sunrise: We dismantle the expedition camp and set off for the town of Hofmeyr, 60 kilometers away. In this dreary transit town we make our breakfast stop, fill the tanks of the enduros and pack provisions for today's marathon day. Today's daily stage with a distance of about 650 kilometers will be one of the toughest stages of the first week. After about 250 kilometers on federal roads through the state of KwaZulu Natal, we reach the border with the Kingdom of Lesotho. After the border formalities and a lunch snack, we will drive on gravel roads across the kingdom up to 2800 meters altitude. Now it gets exciting for the first time: Over offroad passes we cross the highlands, unbelievable pictures and impressions will characterize the second part of the day before we reach Bob`s Campground in the heart of the Kingdom of Lesotho on our Enduros. The bath in the Matebeng river is the only luxury we will have today. Due to the night temperature, which is between +5 & -10°C, we leave it open whether we will camp in Uncle Tom`s hut.
Descent to the battlefield
At 2800 meters altitude the sun rises over Africa for us. We have arrived at the highest point of our Africa Motorcycle Expedition and enjoy this cold morning with a cup of hot coffee on the plateau. Like every morning we start the engines of the enduros and the support vehicle which will be our constant companion on the motorcycle expedition. A new day, a new adventure, over 1000 meters of altitude we will descend today the most exciting of all South African passes, the Sani Pass, the most photographed and most traveled pass road in Lesotho. Many enduro riders on recent Africa tours said that this pass alone was worth the trip.
At the foot of the Drakensberg Mountains we reach the border to South Africa again. After our third border crossing on this enduro and offroad expedition through Africa we are standing on the "Battlefields" (battlefields) in the former kingdom of the Zulu. The Zulu War of 1879 was an undeclared war between the Zulu and the savage tea drinking people. After the British Empire, with its superiority in arms, defeated the Zulu at the Battle of Ulundi, the Zulu Kingdom ceased to exist as a sovereign state. Amidst these battlefields, our fifth day of travel through Africa comes to an end.
From Highveld to Lowveld
Morning ceremony: A quick look at the map, start the motorcycles and then off to the next coffee. On the road again: We disappear over the country roads of South Africa and ride on our motorcycles into the Highveld. On almost only asphalt, we ride for miles through wide plains that begin in the Highveld, which slowly descends to the north, passes into the Middleveld and finally ends in the Lowveld.
Happy New Year, Goodbye South Africa
The new year in Africa begins with a hangover breakfast: coffee, aspirin and a counter beer. On the enduros, start the engine and off we go for the sobering-up stage along the Kruger Park. After more than 3000 kilometers we have crossed the states of Western Cape, Eastern Cape, Kwazulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and Limpopo and are now making the last kilometers to the border to Zimbabwe. At sunset we reach the authentic guesthouse from 1919, where we will spend the night and give our motorcycles a well-deserved rest.
Through the land of the Shona
Welcome to Simbabwe! the border crossing takes place with the crossing of the Limpopo River, which has to be timed correctly depending on the water level and the waiting crocodiles. After we have cleared the enduros and the off-road vehicle through the customs formalities, we can continue. Our next destination is Masvingo, which we approach via the main route. About 40 kilometers away we stop in Great Zimbabwe and dive into a piece of African history and culture. Rhodes Matobo National Park, founded in 1926 and called Matobo National Park since 1953, is the oldest park in Zimbabwe. In 2003 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It became famous not only because Cecil Rhodes is buried here, but also because of the imposing granite rock formations. 2000 years ago, the Shona ethnic group lived on the sacred hills and left a rich heritage of rock carvings, which we visit on foot, because we want to leave footprints instead of just tire tracks on the Trans Africa motorcycle tour.
In the country "ruled" by Robert Mugabe until 2017, more than in any other country in the world, life expectancy has decreased from 55 to 44 years within a decade! 50% of the country's people are under 16 years old and the average age is about 19 years! It remains a question of time until the new generation turns the country back into the Rhodesia it once was in the "old days". For a small insight you can find on our OVERCROSS Youtube channel - this video of an overland tour with truck.
Adrenaline Shock Victoria Falls
As the sun rises over Africa, a new stage begins on our guided motorcycle tour across the black continent. Pack up the tents, have a sip of coffee, a cookie and get on the bike. On- and offroad in direction north-northwest. Stopover at Hwange National Park and depending on tour progress, group dynamics and interest we will go on safari in Hwange National Park. Motorcycle and enduro tours are rather uncommon in Zimbabwe, enduro routes are de facto unknown and will remain so for the coming countries! Be aware before booking that you are going on an enduro expedition that will provide many surprises both on and off road! We travel through Zimbabwe during the rainy season, which means about 33°C average temperature with about 5 rainy days per month. When it rains, it really rains! The gravel passages are muddy, the connecting roads are greasy and the roads are dangerous. Route 1, 2 or 3? Which adventure would you like to have today? The end of the Zimbabwean crossing will be Victoria Falls Bridge at the Zambian border, where we will pump our veins with adrenaline at the world famous Victoria Falls! We recommend jumping into the gorge via the "Gorge Swing" or paddling down the Long Way Down rafting tour - one of the most violent rafting tours in the world!
In the footsteps of Cecil Rhodes
With the sunrise our morning ritual begins, cup of coffee, motorcycle check, discuss the day's stage and go: In 128 meters height we cross on English steel and wooden beams the 1903 in England built Victoria Falls Bridge. In 1903 Cecil Rhodes had commissioned this bridge and had it transported from England by sea and rail freight to Victoria Falls to set another milestone for the Cape Cairo Plan. After only 14 months of construction and erection, the bridge was dedicated by George Howard Darwin, the son of Charles Darwin. The Zimbabwe exit stamp is "hammered" into the passports! We cross about 200 meters of exciting history and follow an imperialistic idea: to cross the continent of Africa. After another clearance at the Zambian customs, we first have to rest on an unspectacular asphalt road, before we take an off-road shortcut towards the northeast and travel through the rainy season which hopefully will not be one at the end of the day.
The young Zambia
We travel northward across the Copperbelt Plains toward Lusaka. The fertile country (at least for women with 5 children on average) is ranked 141 out of 187 in the Human Development Index. The young Zambia (independence in 1964) is one of the countries with the highest HIV infection rate in the world and with about 740 000 AIDS orphans it is one of the orphanages of Africa. English is spoken as an official language, which helps us through the different ethnic groups and languages like Nsenga, Tumbuka, Ngoni or Bisa. Along the Lower Zambesi National Park, we pull our own track on the enduros towards the Luangwa Bridge. Zambia, which was formerly known as Northern Rhodesia, offers a variety of animals and plants in large national parks, here is a video. We cross the land of waterfalls which will also come from above during the rainy season, on about 1200 kilometers from Victoria Falls, across the great Luangwa River, to our own waterfall along the way.
Enduro expedition along Lake Malawi
With the first rays of sunshine we set off on the last kilometers towards the northeast through Zambia and the border crossing to Malawi. Our travel day is only interrupted by the waiting time at the border post, which we can use to have breakfast, refuel, brush our teeth and write postcards. With a bit of luck we get our turn quickly, quickly back on our motorcycles and thus around the postcard writing. After handling the Malawian border formalities we start crossing Malawi. Following relatively well built roads we ride to Lake Malawi and switch off road along Lake Malawi offroad until we reach our lodge. The last stage has it all in terms of driving surprises! Our enduro trips are known for a "fighting day" and this part at Lake Malawi can become a "surprise stage"! At the end of this adventurous stage: jump into the lake, lick wounds and eat delicious crocodile, enjoying the view at the lake.
On the road through Malawi and Tanzania
With a cup of coffee we enjoy the sunrise over Lake Malawi. The route leads along the western flank of the approximately 30,000 Km² Lake Malawi and the border with Tanzania. We will approach as usual "pole pole" (Swahili: slowly). In the time, in which the border formalities are settled, we can enjoy the "delicacies" of the Songwe border river and let play once again the impressive scenes of the last days before the mind's eye, before we leave Malawi on the Enduros. As always, refuel, eat and write postcards before getting back on the bike and through a new African country. For this afternoon we have endless hard African kilometers on the dirt road ahead of us. This day will stick in our bones for a long time with its challenging sections. Past extinct volcanoes, we pass through fertile land with tea plantations, mango trees, bananas and at sunset we reach the coffee region of Tanzania, where we finally hit the hay after a long day of driving.
Travel day through Tanzania
Breakfast with freshly brewed coffee straight from the plantation - if not now, when? We will need the push-up effect of the coffee for the ride on the enduros over the endless expanses of Tanzania. Today's destination is the famous Ruaha National Park, which we reach via more or less well-built Tanzanian dirt roads.
Speeding up is the order of the day. However, 50km/h in Tanzania really means 50km/h - from sign to sign. Every km/h too fast costs. And the speed cameras hide creatively in bushes and even on trees! Therefore we cross Tanzania further along the East African Rift Valley as far as possible from the asphalt with the goal to go on safari in the north in the Ngorongoro Crater, which is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is bursting with biodiversity. Please note that the safaris are not included in the travel calculation and must be carried by everyone!
Here we have now reached the geographical center of Africa and at least in this respect mountain feast!
Full throttle past Mount Meru to Nairobi
Once again it is time to say goodbye to a country. There will not be time on our motorcycle trip to visit the Serengeti, but we will surely come back sometime. Passing Mount Meru, we continue north on our motorcycles. Through the eternal expanse, euphoria remains the only highlight until Mount Longido appears. Here we take a rest before we reach the border to Kenya. After crossing the border from Tanzania to Kenya, Nairobi is not far away, where we are already expected at the jungle crossing with spare parts. After about 6000 Africa kilometers we have, if necessary, the afternoon to equip our motorcycles with new tires in Nairobi. Our "online" guide Jojo will organize everything else from the "office". In the evening we will dine with some bikers from Nairobi and the Royal Enfield importer at Kroko Bar. What we don't manage, we take along as "Dogi Bag" for the road food. Towards evening we chain ourselves to the bar and wash the dust down our throats with cold beer until the doctor comes! We have time to sleep when we are back home.
1001 Africa kilometers...
Our next destination is the border to Ethiopia. 1001 kilometers of pure enduro riding, 1001 kilometers across Kenya until the sun sets and we set up camp. A day as it can hardly be harder. The night in the tent, no shower and tearing down kilometers. Our companions are elephants, giraffes and the other maniacs in front of you on the touring enduro, who will once again reach their limits today. The sun rises over Kenya and the day begins as the last one ended, until the border to Ethiopia is reached. In terms of population, the largest landlocked country in the world awaits us, ranking 173rd out of a total of 187 countries on the Human Development Index. Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries in the world, which has been brought down to above the starvation line by deforestation and the fall in coffee prices with subsistence farming. The question arises whether one should travel to a country in which, according to WHO and UNICEF, not even every second Ethiopian has access to clean drinking water? A clear YES: Through individual tourism, as we do it (especially on this tour), foreign exchange reaches the people who need it most. According to the World Bank, in 2000, 56 percent of the population was still living on less than $1.25 a day. In the same year, the IDA (World Bank Fund for the Poorest) rated 60% of the roads as good or satisfactory. This data is certainly outdated; we will experience the current situation for ourselves as we traverse Ethiopia on our motorcycles. We should be prepared that the infrastructure in the underdeveloped country will be a long and arduous road for us in the night. This country, together with Sudan, will certainly be an indescribable experience on the motorcycle expedition through Africa.
Motorcycle travel day in Ethiopia
The turnpike to Ethiopia goes up and we start through towards the Omo Valley and Mago National Park. The barren landscape becomes greener and lusher, an area with high lion, hyena, giraffe and elephant populations and in places disastrous roads and tracks. There is plenty to see and photograph, even though we are on tour for ten hours a day. Stops for photos and national parks, as long as we are "in time"! Time for a rest or two will be more or less scarce as we cross the African landscape from horizon to horizon, hour after hour, kilometer after kilometer. And further the expedition leads us through Africa, further towards the north which is already waiting for us with a merciless desert.
On the way to the origin of the blue Nile
Avoiding the urban jungle of Addis Ababa as much as possible and freshly supplied with water and bread, we set off on our motorcycles across the Ethiopian tracks. Our next destination is a piece of history, culture and religion in one: Lalibela.
The Timkat Festival, with its procession and celebration of the baptism of Jesus Christ, is one of the most important holidays in Ethiopia, taking place every year on January 19 of our Western calendar, according to the Ethiopian calendar. On this day, thousands of people flock to the holy cities of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. One thing is for sure, we definitely do not want to be out and about in a major city on this day (or days, as it stretches over 3 days), as the streets will be even more crowded than usual and processions of crowds will dominate the streets. However, we want to experience the "spirit" and not miss anything on this Africa expedition and will probably meet a procession in one or the other place.
To Lalibela we come but fortunately only after the big event and can then after the big storm quite calmly examine the UNESCO World Heritage, which are a real gem: The rock churches!
About 2000 years ago, about 400,000 San lived in Africa, of which about 100,000 still live in southern Africa. In 1652 the Dutch started the extermination of the Pygmies in the Cape region from where we started. Today we have arrived about 10,0000 kilometers further north, at the end of their hunting ground. Certainly, a single San did not roam all of Africa for hunting, yet a San hunter covered 4,000 kilometers per year!
From the bush to the desert, from Ethiopia to Sudan
From Lalibela, it's back to eating up kilometers! Passing Gondar, the former royal city of Ethiopia, we suddenly descend from the mountainous highlands of Ethiopia from an altitude of over 3,000 m down to 200 m: Welcome to the Sudan Basin!
From the Sudanese border to Al-Gadarif, our concentration is put to the test. Because it goes on an asphalt road perforated with potholes, which has also not earned the name runway northward into the next larger city and then off into the wild camp. Up to the Sudanese capital Khartoum you can rest on the motorcycle, because it is a rather long and monotonous way along the blue Nile on well built tar roads.
Through the Nubian Desert
Along the "Sudan Express" we will cross the Nubian Desert, which was also called "Taseti" (sandy arc land) by the Copts, for about 1000 kilometers through the former kingdom of Nobatia. The desert area between the third Nile cataract and Khartoum, is considered to be the high culture of Ancient Egypt. In the desert land of the tall Hamitic Nubians we encounter cultural-historical relics of the ancient pyramids, burial cities and temple ruins, which arose before our era from the cultural flowering of the kingdom of Kush.
One last time we fill the water and gasoline tanks in Sudan. Fully refueled, we return to the merciless desert, which will certainly claim our last forces before we reach the border at railroad station 1 to the Kingdom of the Pharaohs.
Crossing the border into Egypt
Inshallah everything works out quickly with the border processing and we can set off for the last stage of the Africa expedition. On the whole Trans Africa Enduro Tour the borders and especially the bureaucracy will be our core issue. The border situation between Egypt and Sudan costs every tour operator the last nerve! Maybe this is the reason why no one offers the crossing? We leave Lake Nubia and come to Lake Nasser with the border crossing into Egypt. In front of us the port city of Abu Simbel and a marathon of authorities to register and re-insure the motorcycles in Egypt. With our new Egyptian license plates we can then drive into Abu Simbel for the long-awaited shower.
In the footsteps of the pharaohs
We leave Abu Simbel on tarred roads heading north along the Sahara. The desert world with its isolated volcanic craters alternates with the monotonous mirages of the Sahara and the boredom of the tarred road that stretches beyond the horizon. After 250 kilometers the checkpoint Aswan is reached. Finally a few curves and the dam of Aswan is reached. On the Khazan Aswan Road we cross the Nile and follow it northward to the Valley of the Kings on Egypt's lifeline. Luxor, the largest city in Upper Egypt, will be the last supply base for us. From Luxor it is only a "stone's throw" through the land of the Pharaohs. We will spend the night not far from the Karnak temple and on the following day we will decide whether to take the boat on the Nile or to cross the country on the motorcycle as planned.
Along the Nile to Cairo
We leave the green belt of the Nile and in the early morning hours we dive into the Arabian Desert (partial desert of the Eastern Sahara). We cross the desert tongue of Quena on the motorcycles, if the road conditions and our condition allow it. Along the Nile we travel on to our big stage destination: Cairo. The streets are getting busier and you can literally feel the metropolis announcing itself with the crowds of people on the streets. West of the Nile we can see the pyramids of Giza from far away. The big goal of the Africa expedition is reached. We are standing in front of the Sphinx and the pyramids, the stage goal Africa is reached after about 15,000 kilometers and we have crossed the "black" continent once in length! Time for a good cold beer.
On the Road to the Destination: Alexandria
We can take a relaxed approach to the last kilometers through Egypt. The route from Cairo to Alexandria consists of well-maintained asphalt roads. Time to relax and review the trip once again. We are welcomed in Alexandria by Ali, with whom we have dinner before checking in and taking the motorcycles to the nerve-racking Egyptian customs the next day, where the shipping container is already waiting for us and the motorcycles.
Zurück nach Kairo
Für den Rückflug geht es zunächst nach Kairo zurück und von dort aus mit dem Flugzeug in Richtung Heimat.
